Mini Cooper S 2004 - Buying Advice Please

  1. One of the best motorsport spectacles I ever witnessed was a one make 2CV support race. At any particular moment no more than 30% of the cars had all 4 wheels on the tarmac and several finished with significant amounts of missing bodywork - it was like a load of teachers and social workers had somehow become possessed by the spirit of Moto 2 riders. :motorcycleduc:

  3. The engine was fine, it was everything else. Mrs Dukesox had been looking at DS sports a couple of years ago and we tested two. I was impressed with how fluid they were and also how well the bumps in roads were absorbed. The complete opposite of the Mini.

  4. I had a 2cv from 1996 to 2000. The dog I had at the time had gone blind and with the rear seats removed it was a perfect car for him to get in without having to jump and then loads of room for him once he was in. It was also really good fun to drive in a slow roly poly sort of way .

  5. Fortunate the dog was blind too :p:D or you would have been driving alone

I do think it would be great fun to drive, scraping the door handles around corners :upyeah:

  6. I remember reading that the design brief of the original 2cv was that it had to be able to be driven across a bumpy field by a man wearing a hat and with a basket of eggs on the passenger seat. The eggs had to complete the journey intact and the man must not bump his hat on the roof.
I don`t know if that is true but I hope it is . None of this worrying about emissions , crumple zones and connectivity, lets just make sure the eggs & hat are OK !

  7. my god, it comes to something when someone calls a BMW Mini unreliable and recommends a bloody Citroen... Honestly... sure it's just one persons experience but wow... :)

  8. Quite right, just my experience, the daughter in laws mini was atrocious , a shocking pile of shite.

In 40 years of driving & riding I`ve had loads of Fiats, Lancias, Alfas, Citroens, Renaults, Ducatis & Moto Guzzis and can only recall 2 serious problems, one each on a Pantah in 1983 and 900ss in 1991. Maybe I have been lucky......

Oh, and recently an S4R that had cooling issues.

  9. I'd heard various things on that subject when I lived over there .....
Road vehicles that could be classed ( and taxed ) as agricultural if they could carry a bale of hay .... that sort of thing

I had the usual prejudices against French vehicles ..... until I bought a Citroen C15 mini van .

Indestructible engine , strong "leggy" suspension that easily managed off-road driving , and could legally carry
three-quarters of a tonne ..... very handy for getting the winter firewood !
A proper little tank ..... and you could take out the entire back seat in 5 minutes , just by removing two large bolts .

I still miss it .... they stopped making them yonks ago .... I think the Berlingo is the nearest thing these days

  10. I`ve owned both a C15 and a Berlingo. Both really good practical motors, great for dogs, firewood as you say and I even managed to squeeze a small motorbike in the Berlingo once .
Not to mention the fact that nothing says you are a real man quite like a Citroen Berlingo ! Here is a picture just to dispel any doubt.

  11. In car SOS they said the brief was to be quicker than 2 horses and cart across a field with 4 peasants and a bag of potatoes - this they tried and the horses won - but I reckon your description is closer to the truth :upyeah:

  12. Are we going ever so slightly off topic here ? Mind you it was the OP who mentioned the 2cv.
I imagine peasants in those days were stick thin. It would be a different result now with said peasants having gorged on crispy creme donuts, KFC & pate de fois gras.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  20. I was about to say exactly that .....
But I don't reckon the OP will mind too much ....:)

    Good idea !
I'm unlikely to shut-up about them now ..... especially having already been on the Wiki page ,
..... and started searching the classified ads
    :p
