I packed in hurling in my mid forties when I was shouldered by a young lad and hit the ground so hard I was briefly knocked out. As I came to, he, gent that he is, helped me to my feet, and said quietly "you don't bounce like you used to". Summed it up perfectly. Finished out the season and left it at that.
But he was just a double hard lad from Catsville (I think) who was catapulted into a glitzy world of fame and fortune. He needed protection. He lost all that when King got hold of him. As I said, he had a lot to cope with.
From what I’ve watched his trainer Cus D’Amato made Tyson what he was in his early years keeping him on the straight and narrow, Tyson had a lot of self doubt or seemed to from what Cus had said on his upbringing. Also Kevin Rooney, once they were out of Tyson’s circle I’m afraid it seems to have gotten shady for him. If you watch his early fights even after he’s flattened his opponent he rushes to see if they’re ok or at least still breathing.
Maybe there were a few double hard lads from Catville. Maybe you were a hard lad from Doncaster. We all have to take responsibilty for our actions once adult. Tyson is no exception in that regard. I think he is banned from the UK so he won't be putting on any exhibition bouts/ performances here.
The older lads are often worse on the peds than the young lads, or just as bad. Raging against the dying of the light.
Tyson’s explosive anger made him world champion but it’s also what ruined him, when Gus died. He then had no father figure and inside his own mind, he was a scared little boy with no one to tell him the boundaries of life. In any game, to be a world champion is an incredible feat, but to be consistent over a long period is the mark of a GOAT, true discipline with zero distractions -women, drugs and keeping humble. Rossi is a prime example and super rare, 25 seasons in the premier league and getting podiums still, I know a few endurance athletes of the same Calibre but without the limelight. I hope Tyson lives a peaceful and content retirement, with true friends, not money friends.
Hard lad from Doncaster? Me? Nope. I’d try to defuse an imminent filling in with humour. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn’t. I was a cheeky bastard though. Why is Tyson banned from the UK? He has a mate in Donny. Or he did have.
The rape conviction & other multiple repeat offences/ jail time bars his admission. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/boxing/25344936
It’s not all that different to trackdays though. I bet more people get seriously injured as a result of tumbling through gravel traps than they do in boxing rings. Road riding even more so.
Anybody here been watching Tyson's podcasts ? " Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson " I came across them a few months ago , and there are some interesting guests .... Tyson Fury Evander Holyfield
Watched Tyson Fury. That was great! I’ll watch Evander Holyfield later. Need to get off my arse and go for a jog.
yes, get on and do summit wasting time talking about deadbeat boxers, although Evander was a good pound for pound dancer.
