Electrex Pickup Loom Issue

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Mark9, Aug 2, 2020.

  1. I just replaced the pickups on my 1991 900ss, one had failed, I bought the new pickup/loom assembly from Electrex £95 (Ducati price £178), fitting was easy, on firing up it started and ticked over OK but popped banged and struggled when revs were applied, luckily I had read an old thread that described these symptoms, in this case the OP had bought the Electrex pickups as seperate items and soldered them to his original loom, he had not connected the white and brown wires on the new pickup to the red and white wires on his original loom for the H cylinder the correct way round, in my case I had bought the pickups already pre-assembled to the loom by Electrex, it’s not easily possible to check they have connected them correctly because they had applied shrink sleeve where the wires join so it would have to be removed to check, anyway as I said luckily I’d seen the old post so I immediately suspected Electrex had connected their loom incorrectly, simple fix I swapped the red and white wires over in the plug that connects to the CDI for the horizontal cylinder, now runs as it should, I’ll be informing Electrex of their error, good job I’d seen that old post otherwise I could have been wasting lots of time suspecting other causes!, (note the above could equally apply to the yellow/black for the other cylinder).

  2. Good to know, if I ever have to make the same repair I hope I will be buying the correctly wired loom.

  3. This exact issue I have had

  4. Hi DQ, was that using the pre-assembled loom from Electrex?, if so I’ll mention it in my complaint to Electrex tomorrow.

  5. No, sorry, I guess it wasnt exactly the same. I had a coil wired the wrong way round, but it was my fault. A simple swap round of the polarity and all was good. I didnt know they did a loom, I made my own

  6. Ah, right, I believe there have been others that have had this issue with the pre-assembled loom, I’ve had nothing but hassle with them so far, first they sent me two seperate pickups not assembled to a loom, then they sent me the assembly without the white plugs for the CDI’s, when I eventually got the parts I ordered I’ve found that they’ve wired it up wrongly, not impressed, they are getting both barrels tomorrow!.

  7. Ive found their products great, Ive had two looms and a starter. I havent however ordered anything else. Sorry to hear of this quite poor service

  8. I bought an electronic ignition for my James Captain from them about a year ago, well from their agent for these parts “Villiers Services” , I spent ages trying to set the timing following the instructions in the box from Electrex, eventually I had to admit defeat and called Villiers services, “oh yes, don’t follow the instructions in the box they are crap, completely wrong“ he said, I didn’t know who to be more annoyed with, Electrex for providing incorrect instructions or him for not telling me when he handed me the box!! :)

  9. Thats bad, first time Ive heard negative about them though

  10. I think their products are very good, it appears there’s a bit of a lack of attention to detail at times, ie incorrect instructions, anyway I’ve sent an email with photos showing them the issue I had with the loom so hopefully they’ll sort it before someone else has a problem, I’m just lucky I saw that old post that had the symptoms in it re the wires being crossed at the pickup end, if I hadn’t seen that I could have been stripping my engine by now looking for the problem! :)
