Dvla (and Moan)

  1. The DVLA have got back to me, now. They want me to apply (not re-apply) for a driving licence for they have never heard of me. I will do the forms (and play their little games, anyway) but then it will, no doubt, get nasty.

Fortunately, I scan things and have sent them a scan of my licence to prove that I did have one and the classes of vehicle that I am licenced for. No doubt, in their total denial mode, they will want to send me a provisional licence and make me do my tests again.

So this looks fun! I got one legal fight going on and now it looks like I've got another one! So, I've got Hastings Insurance as the enemy and now DVLA have chosen sides!

If you get all of this rubbish as the innocent party, yet the guilty party get to lose a year's no claims bonus whereas I will lose all of mine due to the length of time that I won't be insured. Great thing British justice!

  2. I don't know if you've tried and it has not proven to be the case for you, but I've always found it easier and more productive to deal with the DVLA by phone - they've always been very good at getting whatever situation (and there have been several) on screen and sorting it out, even if it takes time, or escalation, there and then, confirming in writing by email, or post, as appropriate.

  3. I was trying to be considerate and helpful as I know they lack staff due to Connie19. That was a waste of time. I fear that phoning will just be more frustration because they'll say they've never heard of me and I'll give them mu licence no, which they will deny. I want written records now as I fear that this will go legal.

  4. The written record and letters are still fully possible after you've tried to resolve by phone. You can ask for written confirmation of any verbal outcome; hopefully you won't need it once they dig out your records while you're on the phone.

  5. I'll try phoning next week and ask for the written record.

I can't make things worse and don't have to worry about losing my temper! I'm already banned and have no valid licence and so I can't make things worse!

  6. Should you not feel you're making the requisite headway with the operative you get on the phone, ask to escalate the matter.

  7. Why and when did you not have a licence?

  8. I never didn't have a licence (until now). I voluntarily informed DVLA that I had a brain bleed as a result of an accident in March '19 that wasn't my fault. They said that I would have to do a driving assessment in Bristol. Part of that assessment is a sight test (probably like when you do a driving test and have to read a number plate at 25 yards, or whatever it is) So Mr Mug. here (I should of just done the driving test -despite the fact that I am more interested in riding motorcycles) went to his local optician, and did a proper sight test. I failed and the optician said that I must not drive and referred me on for a more specialised assessment. So, Mr Honest Mug, here, wrote and told DVLA of the opticians findings, seemingly, resulting in the DVLA erasing all records of me and my licence and writing back to tell me that I'm banned.

I went to Cheltenham Hospital, and saw (pun!) an opthalmologists for a more detailed examination. She confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my eyes. It was the optic nerve connection to my brain affected by my brain bleed. She thought that things had improved and thought it worth doing the DVLA Eye Test.

I did the DVLA test at Specsavers but that can't tell you've if you passed or failed. Apparently, that is classified information that the mug punter or Specsavers are not privy to.

I relay this to DVLA and the reply is, "Never heard or you. You need to apply for a driving licence".

So, what should be a straightforward case of making an appointment for me to go back to Specsavers and do the DVLA sight test has now turned me into 15 year old wannabe moped rider. If I passed that they could then tell me that I was free to drive again. Instead, it is, "Never heard of you. Apply for a Driving Licence."

What really, really p1sses me off is that by all accounts DVLA are really busy at the moment. Rather than just get me to do another sight test, they give themselves extra work by taking this, "Never heard of you" attitude and making me apply for a driving licence, like I'm 15 years old itching to get my first moped.

  9. What is even more annoying, is that I'm just being punished for being honest. If I had just kept my gob shut then I would still have a valid licence and it would of be no issue. The point I've made to DVLA but wasted my time.

  10. Have you still got your hard copy perry ? If so surely that is proof there system has a problem ?

  11. I hope you get it sorted..........

  12. So you have your original driving licence number your number number and your postcode what comes up on the share your licence site?

  13. Inconveniently for them, I scan everything important. So I printed off the scans and have sent them to DVLA. I told them (for they are stupid) that I should just need to be sent to do the DVLA eye test. Then, if I pass, they can send me to do a driving assessment in Bristol.

I will do the DVLA forms now as I fascinated to know if I complete them what they will do next. Will they send me a provisional driving licence and expect me to do a driving test and motorcycles test, or what?

At that point, I'll try my new MP out, but probably have to commence legal action.

  14. Dunno, I'll try and report back.

  15. Sounds like a good plan this covid is a civel servants dream as I'm sure if you could get face to face with a human being you would have more chance of a handy outcome ! Hope it works out soon !!

  16. I doubt if I could keep my temper if I got face-to-face with anyone from DVLA!!!

The problem I have is that I dunno if I would pass the sight test.

If I was to fail it, then that would give the DVLA more ammo to chuck my file away and tell me to go and rot in hell!

  17. I have a 3 year medical licence and sent it off for renewal in mid June. Because I've had treatment on my eyes in the past, they want me to take an eye test. OK, no problem, but specsavers aren't taking appointments to do that and my licence runs out in 3 weeks. I've explained that I am driving to Italy at the begining of Septmeber and need this sorted. I got the reply"Don't worry, you can still drive under Section 88 in the UK as long as you are fit to do so and your doctor has no objections" I then had to explain that Italy wasn't in the UK. I got a reply saying I'll put a note on my file, but didn't get much when I said I'd have to cancel my holiday if they don't sort this.

Out of curiosity, I called my local Specsavers to find that one branch in my area deals with the DVLA. A helpful lady told me that they can see me today, but it's the DVLA that has put a stop to appointments because of COVID. The Specsavers branch is operating normaly ! I can pay for a private test at £30 for the eye test and £50 for the DVLA test. I'm currently trying to get back through to the DVLA to see if this will be accepted.

    Not impressed.

  18. I paid £25 but the problem was Specsavers cannot tell me if I passed or failed. Apparently, they don't know.

Sooner of later, someone will take this further to court. Imagine doing a driving test and at the end, the examiner says. "Well that was fun but I can't tell you if you passed - it's a secret". The examiner sends the results back to DVLA and they write and tell you if you passed or failed. The examiner doesn't know the pass mark.

  19. What came of this?
