Red Flashing Light...not Immobiliser..

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Lockesboy, Aug 3, 2020.

  1. Hi guys,

My new to me 2003 registered 750SS ie has a red light that comes on when you start the engine, if you put lights on sometimes it will flash,I dont think it's the immobiliser, I think its the rectified not charging correctly, I've got a dull tank of juice so need to use some of that before I can lift the tank and check battery voltage...
Any ideas ..am I right and what's to check ..just for clarification it's the red light to the left of the low fuel lamp...

    Thanks,

    Ian

  2. I’m sure I said welcome already, if not, welcome:upyeah:

This thread may be better in the SS section rather than the Newbies Hangout, perhaps @El Toro or @Ducbird could move it when they get chance:thinkingface:. I can’t do that otherwise I would.

  4. Hi, the fault is definitely charge related, I've checked the wiring back from the rectifier, it does seem to be charging but perhaps at a,reduced capacity, My thoughts are that the rectifier is failing, when I get up I'll go back out and have a another look, I think I'll do an ohms test on each of the three yellow wires, the three yellow wires are from the stator, each yellow wire represents one of the three phases from the stator, I checked for charging voltage from the rectifier, static charge on the battery which was fully charged and then with the engine running and the headlight on full beam, the output was around 13.5 volts so that's what's making me think it's a failing rectifier, anyway I'll check the stator on the multimeter in the morning, if that checks out ok then its definitely the rectifier. I've already checked the two red and two green wires and the three yellow wires at their multi plug connectors, I've cleaned up all of the electrical spade terminals last night,..the rectifier connector were quite green in places do I cleaned those up with electrical contact cleaner with a stiff brush.. the red charge warning lamp can either remain off if above 1000RPM or it can come on as a steady red lamp if say I put the side lights on, if I go dipped or full beam the red lamp flashes ten to fifteen times and then goes back to a steady red again, if I turn off all the lights the warning lamp goes out above 1000rpm but at idle lights up a constant red. I'm not sure yet what the flashing red means...

  6. I’d say the intermittent flashing is just because the voltage is fluctuating right on the cusp of triggering the warning circuit, nothing more than that. It looks like you’re close to narrowing it down and identifying the culprit. :upyeah:

  13. Interestingly I was watching space x return to earth and listening to why they radio silence because of the plasma surround the capsule
I’m guessing I’m along the lines somewhere

  14. Well you may be but I’m not sure this would the cause of lockseboy S red flashing light

  17. Hi guys,
It was the battery I think, I bought a new Exide AGM of eBay for £42.00 delivered which I thought was ok for the money..couple of things though, the resistance reading I got when I checked the Stator was just 0.01..that's pretty low, I dont have a service manual but I would guess it's probably between 0.01 and 0.08 ...I dont know if 0.01 resistance is good or bad...perhaps somone could let me know...I bought a SH regulator from a 5000 mile bike, I later discovered there was nothing wrong with mine, I diode tested it and I'm pretty sure mine's ok, again eBay and just 25 quid including post, I've totally changed all the brake and clutch fluids, flushed and flushed until 100% clear, brakes and clutch are great, so much bite from the clutch it's pretty amazing just how good the clutch is...I am going to change the fuel filter in the tank, as you can see I got so far and then kinda wondered how to remove this part..I guess it would unscrew ...if anybody knows please let me know...

    Thanks

    Ian

  18. If you had 13.5 volts then it is charging. Not sure why you are messing with it now.

  19. Bob, I'm trying to establish whether the 0.01 resistance is either very good or very bad, it could be that the stator is on it's way out...or not..

  20. But it is working you have 13.5 volts. You cannot fix something that is not broken.
