Dodgy Mot - Maybe

  1. According to GOV.UK, the rear reg plate on a bike must be lit:

    I've had an MOT place be a bit funny with an after-market tail tidy on a previous bike (fitted by its previous owner), as the angle of the tail tidy (pointing up slightly when fitted) meant you could see the reg light when looking directly at it, and they weren't happy with that. By the time the MOT was due and I took it to my usual place, they never made any comment about this.

  2. So, as you live in France, you don't have an MOT either!
     
  3. Not in all cases no, my 1098R is on the road legally without one as it has no lights fitted at all :)

  4. is it legal though? my 749 was on a "daytime mot" but the tester did say i could still be stopped and done for no indicators or lights... strange country, strange rules

  5. My understanding was that indicators , tail light etc were not compulsory , but if fitted , they must be working ....
    .... daylight use only ??

    But I'm thinking back to my first road-legal bike , bought to pass my test ..... a BSA C15 SS
    .... still mine BTW , but it went walk-about from my shed about 30 years ago .

    If anyone sees it , let me know .... Ha ha ha !

  6. There is no such thing as a 'daylight MOT' really..

    The tester can only check the things that are fitted, if lights are removed along with the relevant switches and wiring, he cannot test them and so cannot fail the vehicle because of their absence. It will pass with multiple advisories.

    However, you can still be illegal on the road under construction and use laws and the old bill will still prosecute you if they are so minded. In the same way they can nick you for anything even with a full MOT if the vehicle is not up to scratch.

    It matters not if the MOT is 10 months or 10 minutes old, if the vehicle is not fully roadworthy - get yer cheque book ready :)

  7. Good point ..... I think it says something like that on the MoT ( or at least on the website )

    An Mot is not proof of road-worthiness or safety , it only indicates that the vehicle satisfied the regs at the time of testing.

    Picture an ex-gf ( the bunny-boiler type ) , who vandalizes your brakes , using the Leatherman you bought her
    last xmas ..... just days after you passed the MoT

  8. My SF848 is UK registered and is in the U.K. at the moment because I have nowhere safe for it in Nantes. It actually doesn’t have a valid MOT at the moment.

  10. Idiot lights in MOT depends on which one in my understanding that’s faulty.
    My 1098 failed last year due to inoperative number plate bulb. In addition, it was explained the high beam idiot light on instrument panel is required to comply with a class 2 vehicle. Doesn’t apply to class 3 vehicles. Taken from the regulations.


    Lights – ‘Tell-tales’ mandatory for lighting equipment (4.9)
    Presence, condition and operation

    The following lighting ‘tell-tales’ in the instrument panel will be inspected:

    • headlamp main beam
    • direction indicators
    • hazard warning lamps
    • rear fog lamps
    A main beam ‘tell-tale’ is only required on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986. Class 3 vehicles don’t need to have the main-beam tell-tale inspected.

    A direction indicator ‘tell-tale’ can be audible or visual.

    A hazard warning ‘tell-tale’ must be a flashing light.

    A rear fog ‘tell-tale’ is only required where a rear fog lamp is mandatory.

    The following categories apply to defects in this section:

    Defect Category
    a. A mandatory tell-tale:
    i. for direction indicators or hazard warning missing or inoperative
    Minor
    ii. for main beam headlamp or rear fog lamp missing or inoperative Major
    b. A hazard warning lamp tell-tale is not a flashing light
    Minor

  13. Several mates are bike techs and qualified MOT testers and mentioned the high beam. Changed on 2018.


    The way that the MOT test works in England, Scotland and Wales changed on Sunday 20 May 2018.

    The MOT test works differently in Northern Ireland.

    The changes affect cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles.

    There are 5 main changes you need to know.

    1. Defects are categorised differently
    Defects found during the MOT are categorised as either:

    • dangerous
    • major
    • minor
    The category the MOT tester gives each item will depend on the type of problem and how serious it is.

    MOT testers will still give advice about items you need to monitor. These are known as ‘advisories’.

    What the new categories mean
    Item result What it means about the item How it affects your MOT result
    Dangerous A direct and immediate risk to road safety or has a serious impact on the environment.

    Do not drive the vehicle until it’s been repaired. Fail
    Major It may affect the vehicle’s safety, put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment. This applies to headlight idiot bulb apparently


    Repair it immediately. Fail
    Minor No significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment.

    Repair as soon as possible. Pass
    Advisory It could become more serious in the future.

    Monitor and repair it if necessary. Pass
    Pass It meets the minimum legal standard.

    Make sure it continues to meet the standard.
