What Does A Category D Insurance Damaged Bike Say To You..

  2. My Cat C Pani is the best. Stand it next to a like for like bike and you know no difference. 16k miles, dragged round Euro trackdays, never given me an ounce of trouble. cant ever see me selling it

  8. I had a Cat D ZRX1200 for over 6 years and never knew ....I only found out when I traded it against my Multi, at which point it cost me a grand more just for being Cat D.
    It had taken two checks for the dealer to find it as I had fitted a private plate. Neither that plate change, nor any of the many insurance companies I had used had mentioned it either. I was utterly gutted
    I had run it through a reg check when I bought it, but that was 6 years back and would have been clean or I would not have touched it. No paperwork to show, so I just got burned.
    I will never, ever knowingly buy another one, or throw away any HPI check papers.
     
  9. I have a mate with a cat D panagale, firstly you cannot tell, apparently it was fairing damage now replaced.
    The price he paid reflected the cat D status, I'm sure it will be reflected when he sells.
    As long as you know and the value is right, make your decision.
     
  10. No problem with a CAT C or D bike as far as I can tell as long as you know what your are getting and pay the right money. I bought one several years ago, kept it 2 years and then sold it . Painless.

  11. I've read that some insurers can start an investigation if another claim comes in on a Cat bike or car. Also it's not unheard of for some of the worst panels etc to get replaced before it gets offered for sale, so it looks like the damage was much less than it actually was.

  15. The seller (independent dealer) said he had, I didn't bother tbh as it came from a main dealer.

  16. My 748 is a cat D, registered when it was less than 6 months old. I paid a fair price for it and would buy another Cat D or Cat N if the price reflected it. Mine has had a new left panel (assumed as different date stamps to other plastics) and plastic welded / repaired nose. I cant find anything else that has been touched. I understand a Cat D was insurance have paid out, so it could be something very minor for eg stolen but recovered after insurance has paid out.

    I recently had a £24k (current value) car written off because air bags had deployed. Assessor stated they write them off regardless of damage if bags have gone off.

A cat D could have simply been an 18 year old 748 that had a side stand fail and fell over, scratched a panel, bust the special screw on the mirror, scuffed the end of the peg and the crappy plastic bung on the clip on and it would take only 30 minutes to fix. The write off is based on the write off value the insurance companies use for the bike which is much lower than most realise, they factor in new for old parts and the costs of recovery or salvage. As I found to my shock in January, the insurance book price for a good condition (Now CAT N) MY02 748 is around £2,250

    They are a source of a great deal of cheap perfectly good useable and safe bikes and an even greater source of spare parts. Buy one at a knock down price and enjoy it then break it, you can't lose. Don't buy one as a long term investment but maybe as a short term parts donor to support a restoration of an investment bike then sell on the frame and excess spares

    Check it over and assess the situation.

    most race bikes get worse than that a few times a season :joy:

  20. Check with insurance company, I looked at buying a cat D BMW M3 many moons ago & no one would insure because of being a insurance loss.
