996 What's The Deal With 916 Exhaust Angles ?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by crowned, Aug 18, 2020.

  1. I see that some 916 / 996 exhausts are tucked into the tail, and others hang low.

i like it when they're inside the tail section, but does it lead to overheating of the tail section in traffic ?

Can the angle be adjusted ?

  2. I can't see much of a difference between the two. I think that carbon muffler is a little smaller in diameter. Also, it might be the difference in the tail fairing. The under tray, fender/number plate holder and the mount onto the rear frame will determine where the cans sit

  3. Also that 996 will have the bip subframe and the 916 the mono subframe I suspect, there is always a degree of difference and the exhaust fitted makes a difference too.

And no. no overheating, my 996 cans are tucked in on a bip subframe. This gives you an idea of whats under there, no vertical adjustments at all.

  4. 996 exhausts are considerably fatter than 916.

I would also think any variation in visible angle is more likely due to the seat sitting higher?

  5. As above - could just be the seat unit - a single seat on a BP subframe needs a spacer if I remember correctly - these are often home made so could result in a different height which would allow it to sit differently.

  6. You can move the exhaust straps along the cans a tad and angle the figure 8 brackets, to hoik the cans upwards.

  7. Both the 916 and 996 in the OP have bip subframes, the 916 has a mono seat fitted which does not match to the curves of the airbox and is sitting in the wrong position, probably because mono seats and particularly aftermarket ones don't sit right on bip subframes as suggested already. The 996 has tail tidy/altered number plate bracket CF Termis also tend to have a smaller dia than the OEM alloy as suggested already. If everything is correctly installed using the correct strap lengths, properly fixed for the type of end can they sit much tighter and look neater as a result.
If you look at these bikes long enough details jump out as not looking quite right, even down to different ride height and fork positions.
