How To Undo 1299 Rear Wheel Nut

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Kaz1299, Aug 18, 2020.

  1. Alright lads

I need to get my rear tyre changed
Thought I’d remove the wheel myself & take to a tyre place instead of taking bike etc

however seems almost impossible to undo the 55mm nut, I purchased a 12 point steel 1/2 drive socket, Used a draper breaker bar with scaffold pole & snap on 18v impact gun with no success, any tips on how to undo nut Or shall I just go to a local garage ? Thanks.

  2. Took mine off yesterday. Popped it into 1st, with the bike sat on a pit mat for some grip, the Mrs sat on it and pressed the rear brake. Piece of wee.

  5. if your having a struggle, then my advice is to pop the bike onto a trailer etc and strap it down, this will top the bike wanting to move forward or spin the wheel when trying to loosen it..
i had an issue with my old 996 and after a trackday this was the only way i could get the hub nut to release...

  6. Same as you I think. 55mm socket and a 3/4” breaker bar. I find that grip under the tyre is key. I use a pit mat. Personally I’d avoid windy guns, impact drivers etc. Nasty things....

FYI it’s torque setting going back on is 230nm:):upyeah:

  9. One thing's for sure, if you don't like impact drivers and windy guns, and you take it to a garage, that's what they will use.

Isn't putting it into as higher gear than first better?

  10. I believe the workshop manual recommends 1st.

  12. My de Walt impact gun took mine off in a second.

  13. My Clarke impact gun gets the nut off with the bike just on the side stand and in neutral.

  14. My Milwaukee impact gun whips it off while the bike is in neutral on the centre stand.

  15. My snap on 18v wrench
Couldn’t shift nut, just received the moss electric 450NM gun lets see if this can do better.

just to clarify it’s Left turn to undo ?

  18. I reckon if it took a few attempts with that gun it was to tight in the first place, torque it up correctly then try again see if you have the same result.

  19. Your thread looks dry. On reassembly, remember to grease the thread. Andy
