I’ve just bought a ‘02 Monster 750ie Dark on eBay. The reg rec was fried. The previous owner has tried jumping the bike as the battery wasn’t quite there. And the RR went up in smoke. New mosfet one fitted. So that should be ok in the future. I’ve charged the battery, which is showing 13V and turned the key. The orange immobiliser light flashed a couple of times and then came on solid. I did a search on here and tried to reset the light with the flashing eobd/twisting the throttle method. Wasn’t having much joy, so I’ve checked all of the connectors. Checked all of the fuses, relays and unplugged and reinserted the ECU harness. I also disconnected the battery and put that back on. Now, the only lights I get on the dash are the oil pressure and the neutral light. Nothings happening to the clocks. No eobd light. No immobiliser light at all. Dead bike. Any suggestions? Is the ecu potentially fried? Have I disturbed something I shouldn’t have? I’m out of ideas. Help please.
The 15A fuse for the headlights also provides a switched ignition feed for the dash. Check you have 12v at both sides of it with the ignition on. I can't think of anything else yet.
Hi Derek, I had a quick check to see what was still working. The headlights are, but the indicators aren’t.
unless you have connected up battery with the wrong polarity then you haven't done anything wrong for starters.
Polarity is right. All of the fuses are fine. I can only imagine that I’ve done something daft or the ECU has had enough of me!
I haven't got direct experience of your bike/loom but the whole circuitry and particularly immobiliser can decide to have a mind of it's own if all components and connections not "as new". Unless something electrical has suffered permanent damage somewhere, you could find that perseverance in checking, cleaning and unplugging/re-plugging relevant connectors could help. Further help is bound to follow.
The indicators are driven from the dash. Even if the ECU was buggered it wouldn't stop the dash coming on. I'd start by checking the supply and earth connections to the dash. There should be 2 red/white wires both from the main 30A fuse providing a permanent 12V. A yellow/blue wire from the lighting fuse that I mentioned above providing an ignition switched 12V and black wire to ground. I would check the ground for continuity back from the dash connector back to the battery -ve and that the other wires have 12v at the dash connector.
Thanks Chris and Derek. I’ve had to walk away from it for a bit! I’ll go back and carry on checking in a bit. Need another coffee first. I’ll post if and when I have any joy.
Power to the clocks again! Still not starting, it has the solid immobiliser light on again. At least I’ve taken half a step forward.
No clue. I thought I’d start simple and work away from there. Unplugged and plugged back in. Battery off for a good few minutes. And now I have power back to the clocks. I just need to reset the immobiliser and maybe I can start the thing!
Yep. That’s fine. The orange light flashes twice and then goes solid orange. I’ve had a quick look at the antenna for the immobiliser and that looks like it’s in the right place to me. I still need to chase the cables back into the bike and see if there’s anywhere else I’ve missed on it.
the LED flashes once to indicate that the serial connection is missing (this is the direct connection - through the main wiring - between engine control unit and immobiliser control unit in the instrument panel); the LED flashes twice to indicate that the key in the switch, or the immobiliser antenna, or both, are faulty; the LED flashes three times to indicate that the system does not recognize the key you have inserted; the LED flashes four times to indicate that the engine control unit has been programmed, but the immobiliser is blank. After the fault flashes finish, the LED comes on and stays on if engine ignition is inhibited.
The two flashes suggest an immo antenna problem. Check that the antenna is correctly positioned in the shroud. Has the bike ever run in your possession? If not. Is the immo antenna wired to the correct connector?
I tried to start it the other day, but the battery was low. It was trying to fire, but couldn’t manage it. Now I get nothing apart from the light. it has had a wash since I’ve had it. I might have some water ingress where there shouldn’t be. WD40 out next.
Thought I’d leave it alone for 24hrs. Came back to the bike after work. Turned the key. No immobiliser light. Hit the starter and it went! It lives! Hopefully that’s it... Thanks for the help guys.
