1200 Multi Or Tiger 1200

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by yellowducmaniac, Aug 5, 2020.

  1. I've not ridden the 1200 Tiger but I have sat on one. I found it to be really top heavy and unwieldy. Put me off even test riding it.

  2. that will be the one

  3. i switched from a 2010 tiger 1050 to a 2015 multi 1200s. both excellent bikes, with completely different riding characteristics. the triumph triple is a joy and so unique - i loved it, and still miss on some rides. the multi has so many bells and whistles, and the engine is by no means lacking. if triumph had offered the newer tiger sport in the states i probably would have traded in for that, but they don't. so i demo'd a multi and it was a blast.

i always find it odd when people claim one bike is "better" than another, especially those models that are so different from the ground up.

  4. Test ride your options, go with the biggest grin, it’ll be the MTS.

And if you think Ducati service charges are scandalous, don’t buy an Audi, they make the Ducati hourly rate look reasonable!

  5. Same goes with Porsche and Mercedes!

  6. Don't forget there is a new 1200 Tiger due out for 2021 which looks like a complete refresh (like the 800 - 900 update this year). If you wanted to go Triumph, have you tried the 900 ? (In my opinion a much better bike alround than the 1200, unless you have to have shaft).

I loved the Multi when I was thinking of replacing my 899, and probably would have gone for the Ducati if I didnt have terrible buffeting with the standard Multi screen (and I tried the 1200, 950 and Enduro, all the same for me). I'm sure its particular to me as also had that buffeting on the GS 1250, the Africa Twin and most other ADV bikes with the Tiger 900 being the best with virtually none.

I"m now a very happy owner of a Tiger 900 Rally Pro. I've also extended the warranty to 4 years which they have just launched.

    RBW.

  7. If you want a good all round large traillie, go for the original world beater, absolutely fabulous machine, other choices will leave you regretting you didn't go for the Orange beast; nuff said!

Interesting. I had a test ride on the new Tiger 900. I had a Tiger 800 for 5 years before moving to a 1200 DVT Multi. A few weeks ago I decided to go for a Tiger 900, I read the reviews, watched the road tests on you tube and had my configuration ready to hand over to the dealer. But I went for a test ride and hated it. The vibration was awful and the engine felt like the mains were going. The seat was rock hard and the bars too close to the rider. I was gutted.
On the upside, I think they look great and the TFT dash is very good. Maybe I rode a bad one. Nice to hear you like yours

  10. Multi 1200s 2013 -- 55467 miles here. Minor issues but all sorted out by myself. Doing my own service (including Desmo) and repairs and always use Ducati or top quality non-OEM parts. Last repair - replaced fuel gauge. Tried to repair it, dry joint on a reed switch but main problem was the floater, got swollen and kept sticking (have posted some of my other repairs...).

Bike behaves and feels great and used quite hard with minimum washes :)

Biggest worry now is that I hear the odometer wont go over 99999 miles and not sure whether it goes back to zero either.:worried: :worried:

  11. 28500 on my 1200 mts pikes peak
Keeps up with my mates fireblade sp
Looks fab , goes like a rocket and reliable
Just had belts service done at Louigi Moto , great bunch of guys and has looked after me over the years ( wouldn’t touch a dealer)
Only issue I’ve had with mine was the sticky exhaust valve ( easy fix , get rid of the heavy cat )
And the front map sensor , replaced by myself :upyeah:
Love mine and possibly one of the best bikes I’ve owned :motorcycleduc::)

  12. I own a 2015 Tiger 1200 XC and a 2010 MS 1200. Both are Gen 1 versions so later models will have more doo dahs and toys. While the latest of both versions have many improvements, the basics are much the same. Both have more than enough poke and both can give many sportbikes a surprise.

The Tiger engine has all the attributes of the 1050 but more of it. A sweet engine with the triple set up giving an excellent combination of revs and torque. A brilliant long distance sport tourer. Way too big, heavy and expensive to use off road.

    PROS
    Lovely engine delivery
    Comfortable riding position
    Great Comfy all day seat
    Good suspension, easy adjustment (Manual)
    Sharp confident handling
    Shaft drive
Deep exhaust tone with after market can (Delkovic)
    Very effective screen (Taller version)
    Huge luggage capacity / capability
    Superb build quality and finish

    CONS
A wierd centre of balance - feels top heavy and can easily catch you out when manoevering at low speed or pushing it about. Vanishes when moving.
Too tall for many. Adjustable seat drops 20mm and longer dog bones / forks dropped, can lower it further.
Basic electronics / dash compared against the 5 year older MS.
Horrendous ride by wire throttle that is ultra, ultra sensitive. A cough can see you catapult forward. But easily sorted by packing damping grease in the throttle assembly. (Yes there is such a thing as damping grease)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MS unlike the earler models is a work of art in my eyes. IMHO this is a sports tourer with the emphasis on sports. Can be a Marmite choice amongst those I know that have tried them. Would you really take one of these off road?

    PROS
    Fabulous engine delivery
    Slick gearbox
Great riding position (Almost identical to the Tiger)
    Comfy all day seat
    Fabulous electronic suspension both ends
Handles like a dream, sharp and confident
    Beautiful to look at
    Sounds brilliant
Can crack windows and set car alarms off with the Akropovic exhaust at low revs. Good in traffic as a wake up to car drivers. Oddly gets quieter once above 20mph.

    CONS
    Too tall for many
    Expensive
Chain drive (depends wether you think of this as a high speed tourer or a sports bike)
Potentially fragile engine - seems some are lucky, but some others aren't. Check the price of used engines. Think later engines were more reliable ?
    Iffy dash quality / reliability
    Expensive parts
    Difficult to work on.
Small luggage size / not the best quality

I only bought the Tiger while I rebuilt the MS engine (Again). The MS is almost back on the road and I will have to make a decision on which to keep soon. While I reckon the MS is probably the best all round bike I've ever owned, the Tiger strikes me as a very good runner up - that may prove to be a touch more reliable. But then, I think once Ive ridden the MS again..........

    Good luck whatever you choose!

  13. Thanks...hard choice but looking increasingly like a ktm either 1190 or 1290 if I can stretch the funds....

  14. If you liked the KTM 1190, try the 1290 Super Duke GT and 1290 Super Adventure S.

  15. Be interested to hear how you get on. Elsewhere, I have been on a similar journey. I've ended up thinking that it will be the Multistrada but I'll have to start test riding to really make up my mind.

  16. Alright, come on Ducbird or whoever sorts this shit out. Thread needs to be moved,... to another forum. Getting far too orange around here now. X
