The Black smoke bellowing out is normal for a highly tuned Diesel as the turbo(s) spool up. The intermittent puffs of white also, as the Turbo lags. They are dirty things, and tuning them is basically a case of throwing in loads of fuel and seeing how much you can burn. The rest comes out the other end partly combusted. Nasher
You'd be surprised how much of a good impression my Discovery 3 - 2.7TD, did of that black smoke with just a 2" split in the hose between the intercooler and the inlet. Basically it was throwing loads of fuel in under acceleration but not getting enough air as the turbo generated pressure was being lost. I dread the same thing happening on my Twin Turbo 3.0 TD Discovery 4, as it will go into complete meltdown and leave me stranded. Nasher.
Does anyone know any more about this little event? I'm assuming the flames are atomised engine oil flashing off as the Turbo lets go. I'm not sure the Diesel itself would go up so spectacularly. You can also inject LPG into a Diesel, so could be that. Nasher.
It does make you wonder. What kind of transmission would put up with that much poke?? I wouldn’t fancy driving it in the wet
And why am I not seeing alerts to this thread??? I wonder if the grown ups on here don’t like me posting in the Lounge?? Can’t think why
