Pantah 600 Restoration

Discussion in 'Vintage' started by Eran Kaufman, Aug 29, 2020.

  1. See my reply in the other thread about pickup wiring.

  2. So slowly moving forward, parts for rebuilding the carbs have arrived from Ducati Paddy relay fast, i replaced everything including slides, needles and needle tubes, float needle valves and seats, choke pistons and accelerator pump diaphragms, so hopefully the will be as good as new.
now i'm waiting for a package from stein-dinse with belts and few other rubber parts.
i friend that had some spares cam to the rescue and gave me a brand new set of pickups on their plate, so for now i wont need to rebuild the wires, i will however use some heat resistant sleeving over the new wires to protect them.
i took apart the entire "electronics plate" but forgot to take pictures of the "Before", the parts catalog is not very clear on this so i wonder if someone has some good clear pictures of both sides of the plate.

  3. I just looked up where you are located because I would be very interested to buy the bike when you are finished. Howerer, Israel is a bit too far away! Good luck with the restoration!

  4. You haven't mentioned anything about the tea strainer in your photos that used to be a petrol tank before vapour blasting...!

I spotted this just yesterday and its still available today! It might be a better proposition to repair than yours https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUCATI-5...222214?hash=item263f633006:g:A0IAAOSwIc9e~G-n

BTW, apologies for asking on your thread, but I'm looking for a Pantah V5c logbook for a project, if anyone in UK has one lying around, please PM me. Thanks

Good luck with your project Eran, keep the photos coming!

  6. Regarding the ignition plate, thanks to a member of the Pantah Facebook group, i got some reference pictures and was able to put everything back together, after a good cleanup.

  7. That tank looks like it's been shot with a shotgun.

  8. That's a helpful picture for me. My starter solenoid is an aftermarket item, I believe from a Japanese bike, that was tie wrapped to the frame.... I wondered where the original would have been mounted.

It looks like your Motoplat voltimeter has been removed. Mine had failed and the previous owner had left it in place. I removed it and could see the whole housing had swelled up and split. Obviously something inside was deeply unwell..

  9. Arrange pick up by a courier company?

  10. Glad my pic helped, yes the motoplat thing was not there, and as i learned (mostly from this forum) it's totally useless POS. so i have no intention of putting it back.

  11. So i was lucky and got a new pickup plate from a friend, it looks a bit different although it fit at the same location and seems to be aligned the same. do you think it will work?
upper one is the new one, bottom is the old one, wire colors are different too, is there a polarity to these pickups? can i switch between the wires of the same one?

  12. If the relative positions are the same and the resistance of te pickups are the same I don't see why not. They do have polarity though. If you reverse the polarity then you will have the ignition unit triggering on the opposite end of the pulse which will shift the ignition timing (advanced or retarded) by the pulse width.

  13. well, the guys over at the Pantah FB group said the new plate i have wont work as it's a koko san unit and needs a different stator too, not wanting to take a chance i had to go back to the original pickups.
So I've rebuilt them like i saw in Derek and Saltspringer threads. i used a dab of JB weld to secure the place the wire go into the pickup body, hope it all holds up.

  14. Ah! The plate and pickups must be off a later Monster or SS model. I hope your repaired pickups work ok.

  15. So wheels are back from powder coating, i installed new bearings and mounted them back on the bike
the package from stein-dinze haven't arrive yet - it's mostly small rubber parts but also belts that i need to put on in order to install the motor back on the frame, so for now I'm just messing with small things until i cam make some real progress.
i think i will modify the electrics by using relay for most circuits (Coils, lights, horn) I'll probably build a complete new wiring harness except from the ignition boxes harness which seems to in good condition apart from some connector pins which I'll replace.

  16. Well, the project is slowly moving along, due to my geographic location and covid-19, it's a long time for parts to get here.
i found an NOS petrol tank in the uk, along with some other bits and pieces.
one order from stein-dinza still hasn't arrive for over a month.
in the meanwhile i took off the heads and cylinders to have a look inside. barrels and pistons look good but the top of the pistons and the combustions chambers were very dirty with carbon deposits, so i cleaned everything. the head nuts were really rusted and it was a struggle to open them.
now i'm waiting for all those different o-rings that goes between the head and cylinder, and cylinder to case.
while the heads are off i will change valve stem seals and adjust the valves. again waiting for parts to arrive.

  17. Eran: Before putting the barrels back on, put a thin coat of grease on the studs.

  18. Sure, this is what im doing
