996 996 Bip

  1. Hello Everyone its been a long time since I posted.
    Need some help here......... 996 Bip 2001 about 25k on the clock

    About 150 miles ago she was fading on 1 cylinder just for milli seconds and i thought aha plugs
    changed the plugs ( which looked fine ) and all seemed good but today on way home from work it started again no back fires just lost a pot for mili secounds ( not sure which pot )
    Ive had this bike for 15 years and still got original fuel filter/ pipes in the tank and when she's running ok she revs well up, so not the filter etc. battery is last years but is still good and turns over fine. Electrical ? relay ? crap connector?
    Anyone had something similar before I strip it right down

  2. If it's really got the original fuel filter filter1.jpg after 15 years and 25k miles, get it changed, now!

    Or else it'll look like this!

Definitely change the fuel filter, the one on my 2000 900ss ie when i bought it 5 years ago was the one it left the factory with stamped 2000, when i removed the filter the amount of crap that came out of it was unreal and there was a load of crap in the tank, cleaned it renewed filter, different bike!
     
  5. what about replacing the pipes at the fuel pump at the same time ...what do i need anything special ?
     
  6. Might be time for a new timing sensor too. The magnet weakens with time and heat, causing the pulse to reduce to the point where it can be marginal for the ecu. Early this year I replaced the one on my 2000 996, which had had a misfire issue for a while. Hasn't missed a beat since.

  11. Ok quick update
    had a saturday free so tank off pump out, replaced all pressure hoses and clips new filter fitted... The one i removed was dated 03 so its been in there at least 17 years , (I had to cut it in halve just to have a look and it seemed clean). Tank is loverly and clean inside and small magnet is spotless.. New O rings all round tank re-assembled fuel in primed and no leaks...All good so far, just have to wait for the storms to clear to take her out...Just a bit concerned that the old filter was so clean as was the tank and that this may not have been the problem?? But time will tell and I will repost later if problem fixed or not.. many thanks

  12. I wouldn't worry about the filter and tank being clean, at least if anything it's done now and one you can rule out if problem persists:upyeah:.
     
  13. OK Up-date time,
    Finally a dry morning.took her out for a steady ride and got her good and warm. filled her up and let her rip..Did about 25 miles at all thottle positions and she didnt miss a beat, so hopefully shes ok only time will tell.

  14. Ok so the sun was out so the Blade stayed at home and the Duc went to work,

    And the problem still remains managed 20 miles to work fine but on the way home momentary lose of power no miss fires just like she's lossing on 1 pot. Just like its fuel starvation because when it catches again theres no backfire / pop .. road is a bit rough there so thinking electrical connectors? causing intermittent fault

    gona start with the neutral switch conector then check relays / fuses sidestand switch / conectors etc..

    any thing else to check... And a big cheers for any pointers
     
  15. Replacement relays are they BOSCH 12V 30A relay. 0 332 019 150.

  16. My ST4s did this last year - a momentary loss of power, every now and then and then fine. Eventually it lost all power and left me on the side of the road. I switched the 2 relays under the seat - fan and injectors, and off we went again no problem. (other than no fan!) Thing is when I tested the relays at home under load they both seemed fine, anyway I replaced them both and the problem has never returned. On a 996 I imagine they are the 2 same size black relays by the battery. If so they are Siemens now Tyco V23073 -B1005 - A302 12v.
     
  17. Seems like you’re on a logical fault finding exercise mate atleast. I’m sure you’ll find it.

    air/fuel is always a good place to start with this kind of thing. Then sensors and plugs/ignition. After that, check all the electrics / connections etc.
