Garage Roller Shutter Doors

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Nasher, Sep 25, 2020.

  1. Thanks guys, the sideways doors would really reduce my storage options down the sides of the garage walls.
And there is no way I ever pay anyone to do anything I can do myself, so will definitely be DIY fitment.
My two lads will help and learn something at the same time.

  2. Nasher,

Plus one for Hormann insulated sectional garage door here. Quite easy to fit, just make sure everything is square. Understand your concerns re clearance height but have a look at the Hormann brochure, as there are several different runners available, some which give additional headroom with the horizontal runners higher than the opening aperture (obviously dependent on how much headroom there is above the door lintel).
I guess roller door section thickness is a balance between thermal insulation (thick is good) and roller drum size (thin is good), and they also have more panel joints so more thermal losses, not so much of an issue for a sectional door. So for spending time in the garage in winter, an insulated sectional door would be my choice.
Not sure what the problem is with the Discovery, if you can get it into the garage and partially close an up and over door, I'd think you could fully close a sectional door which would fix the headroom issue?

  3. Be aware of the noise on steel roller shutter doors; especially electrically operated.
We've one on a container and I won't open it until the neighbours are out of bed.

  4. If youve got an alarm system you can fit a "Soundbomb" i think something like 140db....if youre in the same room as one when it goes off - apparently its that noisy the human instinct is to simply "get away"....my mate was on holiday in spain when his motion sensor went off, he switched on his cameras (on his phone) while on the beach i might add to watch them going through the roof (trying to nick his fireblade) as soon as the first foot went through the roof tile the soundbomb went off....he said "i couldnt track the camera quick enough they were running that fast...." then he reset his alarm remotely and carried on sunbathing....fucking champ....

  5. I have a few mates that work for alarm/cctv companies - they all do say that the wireless stuff is a little pointless as jammers are easy to come by and very effective...unless you have one that records locally then it might be able to record the footage....but if its blocked from notifying you then not very effective...

  6. Hormann doors here too, replaced my steel up-&-over doors with Hormann sectional doors. Quieter & far more warmer than the old doors. Stuck with the manual operation, easy enough to lift & you can fit large shoot-bolt type locks for security. I have no handles or locks on the outside either.
