Rsf Racing - Ducati Trioptions Cup

Discussion in 'Racing & Bike Sport' started by Spence, Jan 7, 2018.

  1. Ducati Trioptions Cup Round 3 - Silverstone

Silverstone has never been one of those tracks we’ve really looked forward too, but with goals set we aimed to achieve.

Free practice - For Silverstone the championship was directed to use a different control tyre. The overall dimensions were a lot different, which changed the geometry of the bike and handling. We put a setting into the bike but it wasn’t great. Few pit stops and changes, we still didn’t find the required setting to go fast. We had a few hours from free practice until qualifying, so went for some set up advice from Ktech suspension.

Qualifying - Straight out the box the bike felt more stable and we were able to push a little harder. Dropping 1.4 secs a lap from free practice was a good jump, but with still more fine tuning to do for the race. Qualifying 15th for race 1.

Race 1 - The start was not great loosing a few positions due to this, we fought hard to get on the pack in first lap. On catching the pack, the racer in fronts bike started smoking and oil was spraying onto visor. The only thing we could do was back off, as it looked like a crash was likely and the lack of adhesion was causing slides for ourselves. It took over a lap for the racer to pull over. By this time a pack behind had gathered some pace and caught me up. With circa 20 over takes in just 5 laps with fellow riders, we finished the race in 14th. In the points but not what we wanted. Back to the drawing board for some mechanical and suspension changes for morning warm up.

Warm up - Using warm up to test clutch issues, we changed the suspension to see if we could iron out some pumping out our the fast corners. Clutch worked better but suspension and tyre combination was still not great.

Race 2 - We had to start further down the grid for this race due to lap times from race 1. We definitely felt like we had now finally found the key on the set up and Ktech were on hand to check and offer advise. The race started with an almighty wheelie, and lost a huge amount of places. The race was now on to fight back and get back into the points. The race was filled with great racing, with everyone’s lap times so close. The race finished with us just in the points in 15th but again made huge jump in lap times.

It’s been a tough weekend for us, but finished again both races with points in the bag, we’ve got to take the positives.

Massive thanks to all sponsors and supporters that make this happen. Also massive thanks to Roy and Luke for all the help and support over the weekend.

The look forward now is to round 4 at Oulton Park! One of our favourite circuits!

  3. Ouch that are will only be worth £50 on eBay now LOL :upyeah:

  4. I’ve 4 rear tyres from this weekend looking similar. Would be mega for a left handed track like Blyton, or flipped to be used at brands Indy.

  5. What is it they say? 2 clicks of rebound mate lol

What was it in the end? That’s geometry tear isn’t it?

  6. No mate. Silverstone wear. I was not alone in this. 600’s with more laps had the pattern disappear completely, and mate on superbike had chunks missing

  7. Ducati Trioptions Cup, Round 4 - Oulton Park

Oulton Park is one of the outright best tracks in uk in our eyes. With a mixture of fast and technical corners, blind corners with massive elevation changes. But with this comes huge amount of physical energy required and bike set up to good to get the best you can.

Free practice -This went well considering we’d not been here in over a year and on a new bike. We used the random settings generator with the help of the guys from Ktech to get us somewhere in the regions to get round quick. Quite content on the times we analysed the data and looked for where improvements could be made to lines and set up.

Qualifying - Our strategy for Qualifying was go as fast as we could for first few laps and come in. Due to our restrictions on tyres, we looked to save our tyres to race on. Dropping 0.5 seconds from FP and top 6 in all speed traps, linking it all together would be on for a good race. Qualifying in 16th not ideal but knew we could go faster. Over night a gearing change was made and electronic settings changed to aid us in race 1.

Race 1 - Had a really great start, drive hard to turn 1. Turn 1 everyone was funnelled in and lots of rubbing happened. As we settled into the race and the pace was going faster we dropped another 0.5 seconds from qualifying. Unfortunately bikes in front made a couple of mistakes making us slam on brakes. The gap was then opened up to them. In trying and pushing hard to get back into them, arm pump kicked in. Thus not being able to move the bike as we wished and brake like we had been. Loosing a couple of positions, the race ended on lap 10 with a red flag and us in 14th. Taking points and a new personal best around Oulton was great.

Race 2 - We had to start again from 16th on the grid due to lap times from race 1. The start didn’t go to plan with some massive wheelies. The race though was great, it was a 10 wheeler for majority of the race. With times so tight, over takes we proving to be tough. Arm pump then started to come back, and braking was made harder. Loosing a position on penultimate lap, and finishing in 16th wasn’t ideal but another personal best was achieved.

It’s been a tough but positive weekend, just lacked a bit of arm stamina but we finished again both races and took points.

Massive thanks to all sponsors and supporters that make this happen. Also to all the support crew getting us on the grid.

The look forward now is to the final round of the shortened season at Brands Hatch GP in 3 weeks time.

  9. Ducati Trioptions Cup, Round 5 - Brands Hatch. The last dance.

Leaving Oulton Park with heads held high taking the positives of points and personal bests to Brands Hatch GP, we felt confident of a good final round.

Free practice - Not having raced or ridden here for some 15 months and not riding a bike in between the rounds, we had to just get out there and get head up to speed and bike dialled in. Through out the session, times dropped near to previous PB without a stop or setting change. Bike and rider feeling good, new tyres and a few setting changes for qualifying would all that would be required for next day.

Qualifying - Our strategy for Qualifying was go put do a few laps and then chuck another rear in for a flying lap. Times again dropped and the settings looked to have worked. Tyre was changed and back out, with only 2 mins of the session to go, it was a quick out lap and 1 flying lap. Dropping 2 seconds from Free practice and setting a new PB on the flyer we managed to claim 18th place for Race 1. With only 0.3 seconds to 13th. We were in for a close race and tough fight for points.

Race 1 - We knew it was going to be tight, and from the start it was. All shoulder to shoulder, elbow to elbow the race was on! Lap 1 was crazy with riders making some really bold overtakes. Settling into the race there was a train of about 5 of us battling it out for points. Sitting 16th Come the last lap flag, the move for a point into the last corner had to happen. Lining it up and getting past into 15th, we noticed the yellow flag and fellow rider sam cox in the gravel, and having gone slightly wide the drag to the line we lost out on a point by 0.1 of a second. Setting our fastest laps of the race on final 2 we start race 2 in 19th with again another new PB.

Race 2 - With a poor start we lost a few places. Getting head down on first lap we gained them back and into 16th. With again a 6 bike battle, positions changing every corner it was a very exciting race. Going into last lap loosing a position sitting in 18th, was all about the drag to the line, but just wasn’t enough. With 6 bikes all crossing within 0.3!! Was best race of the year!

We might not have been in the points this weekend. But the racing was brilliant, so close from start to finish. Dropping a massive 2.8 seconds off our PB was a massive jump.

Massive thanks to all sponsors and supporters that make this happen. Also to all the support crew getting us on the grid.

End of season post will be out soon.

  11. End of Season

At the beginning of the season, we didn’t think we would see any racing or race ourselves. Doubts of if we’d done the right thing, buying and prepping a new Ducati V2 was running around our heads.

With the restrictions in place the team at MSVR and Bennett’s british superbikes, got the season off the ground. Yes it was only a 5 round, 10 races for us in Ducati Trioptions Cup but in the current environment, this was mega. With the green light given it was then down to the Army Team Management then to get us racing, and we cannot thank all involved for the hard work behind the scenes and at the Army sports control board for getting us racing.

So the season, we’ve had many ups and also downs. Starting the season off at Donnington Park, we were very pleased with a 12th and 14th. Scoring points in both races straight from the off. Round 2 saw us at Snetterton, one of our bogey tracks. Unfortunately Crashing out of 12th in Race 1 we rebuilt the bike over night and finished race 2 in 12th after a tough race. Silverstone was up next not one of the most exciting tracks but with the results so far we felt confident. For this round we had to use a 190 tyre instead of the standard 180, and they were for the bin after just 20 laps! Was an expensive one but we managed 14th and 15th respectively. The penultimate race weekend was at Oulton Park, One of the best tracks in UK in our eyes. Finishing in 14th and 16th. Then the finale! Brands hatch GP. We didn’t finish in the points in either race, but what a great weekend racing. Some of the toughest and tightest races I’ve ever been in. With 0.3 seconds covered 12th - 18th over the line. Was a great way to end the season.

The pace this year has been great and having set PB’s at every track we’ve been to this year. With the biggest jump being the final round, a massive 2.8 second dropped!

This year wouldn’t have got off the ground without those previously mentioned but also to all my personal sponsors. Special thanks go to Mick at GMR PROJECTS, Jamie at Chamois Consulting and AJ at Mackinnon Construction. Massive thanks to all that have supported me again this year. I’ll tag you all... if I miss you PM me lol.

So what does 2021 hold? At present we aren’t sure. As soon as the decisions been made we will let you all know.

Thanks again to all that have helped, offered advice, supported and sponsored us even through this difficult world we live in right now.

Time now to relax and decide what the future holds.

    Ciao
