As the title; I lined everything up. Greased the alternator spindle and gear shift gromet. Applied liquid gasket bolted it down and the water pump impeller came out. I had not put back the the water pump cover. Any thoughts where i went wrong? Impeller was removed and replaced. Circlip in place and everything appeared solid.
1st thought is that you hadn't lined up the water pump impeller shaft correctly with the timing shaft, so that when you tightened the alternator cover down it's pushed/bent the circlip out of it's position and pushed the impeller outwards. Steve R
Yep replies make sense..I shall have to try again. puller and then clean the cases again. Bit flimsy though, just that ting little circlip
No, the cover should not touch the impeller. The circlip on the water pump shaft only has to work against the spring of the mechanical seal.
thanks. got in there and circlip is off. slipped it on and pushed like hell to see if it would come off. Nothing. Case could push it off so not sure how that tiny thing can be secure
There is a fair bit of force applied when you tighten even small bolts. Plenty when clamping a cover to push the circlip off. If you haven't already, when fitting the cover, turn the impeller by hand until you feel it engage with the drive slot and gently tap the cover with your first. It should go on nearly flush.
I turn the engine so that the slot is vertical and turn the impeller to the same alignment then they are fairly easy to slip together with the minimum of jiggling and will usually just go straight on.
Yes, I think it's odd that the service manual tells you to fit the water pump cover to the alternator cover before fitting the whole lot to the engine. It then tells you to turn the engine over using the timing belt rollers to make sure the tang is engaged.
OK so thanks again guys all back to gether then....I found a washer..bugger. I have racked my brains to think where it comes from. Can any recall if their is a washers on the impeller shaft then a circlip? Washer is a roun 2mm and the right diameter. The washer on the fan case bearing is home. Bloody workshop manual is not great
Yes, there is a thick spacer with a small rebate on one side, which holds the circlip in place. The washer goes on first, with rebate pointing into the centre of the engine, then the circlip.
Thanks a lot. it was oily and with signs of polishing so I figured. I am thinking about getting new circlips but with everything shutdown it's tough. Thanks again really helpful
