1000ds Cuts Out When Engaging Gears

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Dean Roberts, Nov 24, 2020.

  1. The side stand switch doesn't earth through the mounting bolts, it earths through the black/green wire to somewhere on the frame or engine - which might be the route of the problem. You'd be best to make sure the side bolts are properly tightened though. They are known to fall out, so the bike could fall over or you could even damage the crankcase case.
Neutral light on won't affect the MoT.

  2. Have already tightend the sidestand bolts & the bike has had earth problems in the past, I don't suppose anyone knows of any frame or engine earth points to check apart from the main engine earth at front left of engine ?

  3. is there not a pile of earths on the -ve battery lead at the battery.

  4. There is a big bunch of combined earth leads on the battery earth, they look a bit dull but im not sure what i could do to improve it without replacing that part of the loom ?

  5. i dont know if they are connected to the circuit that's causing you problems. but a good repair there would be relatively straight forward. but i get it, the first cut is the hardest..

  6. I had my 748 in for its 15k service/valve check a few weeks ago and Glen (Moto V) gave the bike a good look over and noticed this could do with a clean up, he opened it up and you can see the corrosion has crept up under the loom sleeve, so clean up and new bit of heat shrink.
Might not help you but a good clean is a good thing.

  7. Hi after checking the main battery earth today & a quick clean it looks pretty good & engine is still cutting out.
I have dug out an old side stand cut out switch bypass kit
it is 4 connectors connected by wiring one plugs into side stand connector the other sidestand engine side connector
the other two neutral switch & loom side neutral switch connector (hope that makes sense)
This bypass kit does not work either but has got me wondering
Can the neutral switch cause the ecu to cut out the engine while the side stand switch is still working properly ?
The neutral light on the dash still goes off when gear is engaged so dash is clearly getting correct signal .
Hope this question is understandable lol
    Thanks

  8. Only if the ECU thinks the stand is down

  9. If you’ve bridged the stand connector, loom side, and the problem still exists then your issue is loom side. If you ground the wire to pin 38 and the problem goes away, the problem is on the earth wire. If not, then there’s an issue in the ecu wire.

  10. Thanks will look into over the weekend , pretty sure it's an earth issue now, think it's turned from quick fix to get me through winter to long term project :D.

  11. Have got the problem temperarely sorted by cutting up the old side stand cable grounding the black earth wire and joining up the other 2 , just need to replace the headlight parking light bulb for the MOT now.
The most difficult bulb i have ever come across virtualy impossible to get to and get out .
Is it twist on connector ? it turns but doesnt seem to loosen .
    Bloody Ducati lol
