Longer Lasting Tyre

  1. Was thinking of putting a 190 on 1299 as got 2 Scotland trips planned has anybody else put one on and what cheers0

  2. Bridgestone do the s22 in 200 mate if that helps

    mega do it all tyre.

could get a 190 on their I’d imagine but probs need to recalibrate the tc from memory

  3. If you have two Scotland trips planned I would try and squeeze a Michelin Road 5 on there, a couple of reasons for me, I agree with Advikaz about the Bridgestone S22, great tyre, I had them on a new Ninja 1000sx Kawasaki I bought earlier this year and was so impressed with them I’ve now got a set on my 899 Panigale, but the two reasons why I would fit the Michelin for a tour in preference are -

Firstly, you will get far better mileage out of the Michelin, two Scotland trips up from Cheshire? Are gonna be a couple of thousand miles each? Getting on for 4,000 miles probably?
You won’t get that mileage out of the S22s, the first set I had on the Ninja only did 2,200 miles and they were shot, and about 600 of those miles were steady running in ones, I’ve now got a set of Michelin on there and they have done just over 3,000 miles and looks to have at least another 2,000 in them.
Also the roads in Scotland can be really abrasive on tyres, quite a lot of roads are surfaced with shellgrip ( it’s kind of buff colour as opposed to your normal black tarmac) great for grip in wet conditions, but you’ll be amazed at hoW quickly it wears your tyres out..

Secondly, the Michelin are sport touring tyres and you’ll find more wet grip with these than the Bridgestone’s and boy, does it rain in Scotland sometimes!!
I fitted a set onto my Panigale for a Germany tour a couple of years ago and they were great, possibly a tiny bit slower steering than the S22s, but don’t forget, you’ll be carrying luggage so you won’t even notice that and you’re on tour so in reality you won’t be riding at full tilt ( all the time anyway!) the Michelin will give you more than enough grip for any road riding situation.

Most of my mates use the Michelin, riding skills and speed vary through the group, but the fastest guy out of all of us uses Michelin and after a good hoon the sides of his tyres are starting to ball up, just showing how much he can crack on with them.

    Hope this helps

  4. I have the s22 on now they are a great tyre but like you say they don't last. Was thinking about a sport touring tyre if I honest road 5 etc. Was wondering if anybody have put some on as they don't come in 200 rears

  5. Is it a 1299 Pani? Would say you need your answer from someone with the same bike and how do you ride? All relevant as I would think twice about a big trip on used tyres full stop. So many variables.
Earlier post makes a good point about the abrasive road surface in Scotland. I got 2200 miles from a Pirelli Scorpion front tyre on a multistrada up there. Due to road surface and suspension setup. Scorpion tyres are basically touring tyres.
The Michelin Road series is superb. But, from the Road 2s which really did wear great, 3s, 4s, 5s all have their slight differences in how they wear. Probably due to the sipes and compound changes.
you may find you come back from the first trip with lots of tread, but flat in the middle rear (which will feel terrible when you tip in to a corner) to a front tyre lifting on the sipes at the edges. Both would spoil the second trip.

  6. I have Mich P5’s front and back time to change the front at 15k, the rear is at 12K. They’re both due a change been great tyres on my r1150rt.

  7. Michelin Power RS :p @J biker

  8. I’ve used a few sets of Michelin road 5s now and found that they hold their profile pretty well, certainly better than some other tyre brands, as I say, the ones on my Ninja now have done over 3,000 miles ( 1,200 of which on a Scotland weekend in September) and the profile front and rear is still good.

The S22s on it originally were not as good, rear was showing evidence of flatting and the front had gone pretty triangular as the shoulders had worn with trail braking, you could feel it tipping off the peak for a while before I replaced them .

I bloody love new tyres me !!

  9. Won’t last 5 minutes!!

I bought two of these a while ago, never go one past 1,800 miles cos both of them picked up punctures at roughly the same mileage, now I can’t remember the last time I had a puncture and to get two straight off the belt on the same make of tyre made me think that the carcass on these are just a bit too thin for their own good..

Had to plug the bugger to get home :imp: !!

    Personally, I won’t ever use RS’s again

  10. Was a rib tickler for Jim. I had to change one while on a trip, Jim never lets me forget

  11. Sounds like you had a similar experience to me then Andy!

  12. ^^^ lol. When there are still four days to go and someone says “do you think these tyres will last”...? Never a good sign in my experience ;)

  13. Strange things tyres??

This happened to me on a Sunday blast not long after I’d bought the 899, it looked okay when we went out and on the way back, one of my mates came alongside and started waving me down, I just thought he wanted “ another “ piss cos he’s got a bladder the size of an egg cup :D then he leant over and said to me “ have you seen the state of your back tyre”??......

Trouble with the original Pirelli’s was that there wasn’t any groove near the centre for you to judge the tyre wear, it only caught me out the once!

Wondered why the traction light kept flashing on the way back ??

  14. My best mate and touring buddy runs Road5s on his 996. He's an ex manx and classic racer and doesn't hang around. For a combination of mileage, wear and predictable performance wet and dry they're hard to beat IMHO. Have run them on my Mutley since the original Scorpions wore out.

Dual compound tyres by, their nature, have a certain mileage on the harder centre a lesser amount on the softer shoulders. This obviously varies depending on surface, how they're treated, ambient/road temperatures etc. etc (many variables). However, if you do lots of motorway commuting then they'll wear flat and the centre will be shot before the shoulders. Conversely, if like me, you're a recreational rider and avoid motorways/like the twisties then the shoulders will be shagged first. Brake deep into corners, something I tend to do, then the shoulders on the front will result in front tyres wearing out first and possibly going triangular in profile (the Road5s seem to cope better with this and unlike the MV I now tend to do this less anyway). In short; the manufacturer needs to decide on the compound mix for a certain type of rider. The Road5 is a good match for me. It's predecessor, the Pilot Road 4 and the Pilot Road 3 before that, was too soft on the shoulders. I think the front was also single compound. I believe that the Road5 front is dual.

  15. Exactly what Bumpkin said,..my point entirely is the Michelin road 5 is all the road tyre you’ll ever need for mixed touring if you want to get a few miles out of them :upyeah:
