950 Multistrada 950 False Neutral

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by DucatiG25, Dec 9, 2020.

  1. Hi all,

I have a multistrada 950 and occasionally it hits a false neutral between gears.

I was just wondering if anyone else has the same issue and if it can be rectified or, is it a common issue that I need to live with?

    cheers!

  2. You just need to be a bit firmer when changing/booting it into gear.

Ps Welcome but introduce yourself properly in the newbies section too :)

  3. On my 999 and 1198 I found that adjusting the gear lever down slightly gave a more positive gear change.

  4. 1200 Enduro here, bang it in like you mean it.

  5. Thanks all,

edward, I assume you have the same issue and just have to be pretty firm when changing gear?

  6. Both Multis I have had both needed a firm gear change to make sure it doesn't hit a false neutral, wouldn't be a ducati without 'character '

  7. If it’s on the up change then try adjusting the gear lever down a little. Don’t be subtle with it when you change!

  8. Might be worth checking your chain tension. I found that when my DVTs needed adjustment I’d start getting false neutrals.

  9. Definitely worth moving the gear lever down a few mm.

  10. Bang it in, I found the same on my Hyper. Soon cured the bastid

  11. Yep. It's mainly between 5th and 6th on mine but there's another falsie lurking somewhere else (between 3rd and 4th I think).

Definitely have to be positive when changing.

  12. Still occasionally happens on my enduro, get it into the next gear firmly.

  13. The Monster 821 I had as a courtesy bike a few weeks ago seemed to have a box full of neutrals. My 1260 Mutley has an occasional one if you're not positive with the change.

In my experience with my bike it didn't seem to be a new vs. run-in gearbox issue like the difficulty in selecting real neutral. That was pronounced prior to the first service and now, after 10,000+miles doesn't feature at all.

  14. My 1200 Multi had a few false neutral moments. 5th to 6th was worst. All improved a lot with miles.

  15. Thanks for the reply’s folks. Has anyone had Ducati or a mechanic look at the issue? As I’m considering booking it in with Ducati as it’s still in warranty!

  16. An update folks:

I took it to Ducati under warranty, after a test drive the technician noticed that when he wasn’t positive with the down shifting (gently down shifting), he could make a false neutral.

They took the same bike out which they use as a demonstrator to see if it was an issue with my bike or whether it was a general issue with the model.

The demonstrator had the exact same issue and it would appear that it’s a general issue with the 950 and that you have to be positive/firm with the gear changes.

From doing research, it appears that a lot of Ducati’s have exactly the same issue, including all Multistrada models!

  17. All Ducati’s do that sir!

  18. Have you ever put an adjustable gear lever on it? I’m thinking if it was shorter it may help prevent false neutrals?

  19. Nope. I’ve just booted it in.

  20. A shorter level could make the false neutrals worse as a shorter lever will have less leverage(pardon the pun) meaning more force from your foot is required!
