Hey all, I'm literally in the middle of replacing the chain and sprockets on my 2001 ST2 and have found the replacement front sprocket has no holes to put the bolts holding the retaining plate in. Am I missing something? It's a kit by Regina ordered specifically for the bike, even the number of teeth are standard. Is it meant to be held on another way or does it somehow magically stay on? Or have I been given the wrong one? Going a little greyer over another 'simple' job cheers, Jon
Wrong one by the sounds of it. I just got a new Renthal one and it has the holes. I guess you could try drilling and tapping (M5, I think) it if you have the tools and you don't want to wait for the right one. AL
Doubt you'd be able to drill or tap it. I recently bought a Renthal sprocket that was drilled & tapped but the threads weren't quite cut properly all the way through so the screws wouldn't go in (from the correct side). I tried to tap it and broke 2 taps in doing so - rock hard it was. In the end I sent it back to Renthal who sent me a new one which was fine.
Thanks for the quick responses, not sure I'd trust myself trying to drill n tap new holes. Just gonna get a new one. The place I bought the set from only accept returns within 7 days of receipt in originally packing etc etc. and then they want to charge 25% handling So for £25 I'll just get a Renthal one, and a new retaining plate as well seeing as mine looks a quite chewed up . Rear sprocket and chain are on at least and belts to do tomorrow Thanks again Jon
I'd still try returning it as it's not what you asked for, and it'd be a lot easier than even trying to drill it let alone tap a thread in it. Good quality front sprockets are stupidly hard. Many years ago i tried to lighten one by drilling it. Ended up using a drill bit i use to drill safes with. After one hole, a long time and blunted bit i gave up. But it was a little bit lighter.
