Motorcycle Cameras

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by PerryL, Jan 2, 2021.

  1. I've been checking out some of the Kawasaki Versys forums and someone has suggested a bikecam. If I had had one in my accident it could only help with the crap that I'm getting from the other side's insurance company. I'm going to get one before I get the Kawasaki, so it will need to get on with my ST2 and ST3 and be easily transferable - unless I buy one per bike. Anyone used them?

  2. You've not mentioned the make of the camera kit or model. If you are caught doing potential illegal activity the police have the right to seize your equipment & memory-cards. If you cause a road traffic incident, again other motorists can have the right too your footage. By going through the police to request copies & have that used in court.

Not trying to put you off but you need to be aware of the pitfalls & scenario's that could play out. I personally would suggest a helmet camera. It tends to put car/van drivers into a "..I'm been recorded shite he could be an undercover cop.." lark. Allowing you to filter & get a move on away from hazards.

This is the style of language I'd use if I was pulled over for exessive speed. I am avoiding been around numpties who are not using mirrors & don't signal their intension to change lane officer!!

  3. I have a Nortek front/rear set up on the GS. Very similar to your picture above. You can’t easily swap this style between bikes if you want a neat install and wired in to a switched live. (So it powers when ignition on).
A helmet camera is obviously easier if you swap bikes a fair bit; but obviously unless you have 2 on your bonce; facing front/rear. It’s not going to spot tail end Charlie trying to hump your number plate.

  4. Although a helmet cam has the advantage of being bike independent, I don't really want the complication of wearing it, or fastening it to my helmet.

I think that I prefer the idea of having something on the bike and it looks like that would be permanently wired in and so one per bike. Not the end of the world as they are not too expensive and yes it could mean rear facing as well - although no idea where I'd have a rear facing camera on an ST3! More research!

  5. I know ski helmets are generally of a less sturdy construction, but wasn't fitting a camera to his what ultimately caused Michael Schumacker to have such tragic life changing injuries?

  6. Even when the ignition is off there is still a very small drain on the battery. Nortel had a good write up showing pictures of the current draw when bike ignition was off etc etc. Nortek just sold one type but internet search showed others that were nearly identical. Other good thing I liked was all the camera and control unit leads had IP rated sealed automotive connectors. A must when fitting to a bike.

  7. Personally I wouldn’t attach any form of leverage to a helmet.

  8. I believe so. A helmet is designed to roll so as not to hinder rotation and cause damage to the neck in case of an "off". So sticking a square box on the side MAY cause an issue.
I know motorcycle Plod in my county have Drift POV cameras on their helmets. As Plod, a risk assessment would have been carried out so it seems the risk was deemed minimal(perhaps).
The next time I pull up next to one I'll ask!

  9. This is correct AFAIK it was the metal base of the camera mounting that exacerbated his head trauma as it crushed what little protection the shell had.

  10. From what I was told (though I can't find any official details so may be untrue), the camera pierced through Michael's helmet. This could explain why the injuries were so severe from a reportedly low speed collision. Maybe this wouldnt happen on an ACU tested helmet as they have impact tests with angled objects as I understand it.

  11. UK camera mounts come with 3M adhesive & no company offers screws to piece helmets. Helmets would not meet british safety standards if you start bolting or screwing metal things into them. Phone helmet kits come with clamp style system...Where is the statistics to support that these items could cause injury or add to such an event. But as its a personal thing if you fear antics like...wearing a watch or neck chain. Will mean in a crash you'll have a flayed hand or finger or broken neck. Don't wear it okay!

  12. My front & rear on the Panzer. Metal bodied with glass lenses too. Very small and unobtrusive.

  13. If people are so worried about the risk of having a camera attached to the helmet then what the fook are they doing riding motorbikes?

  14. Because you don't want to increase risk of injury if you have an off. I guess that most people accept the level of risk (but not necessarily liking it) but nobody wants to increase the risk of injury - especially head injury.

In the last place that I was at (Wheatridge Court) in Gloucester, around a quarter of residents were then with brain injury - and these were the better ones, judged to be likely to go home (which I would of thought fairly unlikely and probably sheltered accommodation, at best. Head injury with brain damage is not nice - technically I had it - twice. Most of this 25% couldn't cook or shop for themselves. Many could not get through the night without wetting the bed. It's not nice.

I always wear Arai as I thought that they were the best but both me and a mate wearing Arai have suffered brain injuries. I will need to buy another helmet but what's better than Arai? As far as I know - nothing.

  15. That looks exactly the ticket and is so small that the rear facing one would fit were you have it, easy. What make is that?

  16. One Nortek sold but I think they’ve stopped doing them. Your picture of a system uses the same lenses as mine. I think the recording body’s are fairly generic.

  17. Sorry but in my opinion there is more chance of being killed by a horse, dying of a smoking related disease, (I don't smoke) or getting cancer than being killed by a helmet camera. I have been happy to take risk in my life, parachuting, scuba diving, flying, rock climbing etc, but motorcycling is far more dangerous than having a helmet cam.

  18. Actually (for I claim real World experience in this!) the three most common accidents that come to casualty on a Sunday afternoon (before all of the Covid) are motorcycling, cycling, and horse riding. I want to motorcycle but minimise injuries if I crash and not do a Schumacher! And most of the really serious injuries that come from these pursuits, that require a stay in hospital, are head injuries, that often result in brain damage.

  19. I have this one:
VSYS Motorcycle Dual Dash Cam- Full Body Waterproof P6FL

Bought through AliExpress (didn't bother with monitor). You can use a smartphone app to set it up, then it's forgotten until footage is needed.

  20. What from having a camera on the helmet?
If you worked in the cancer ward then you would have a different view on things.
