1260 Brake & Clutch Lever Plunger Booties

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Gimmethecash, Jan 13, 2021.

  1. Can anyone share the special trick to get the rubber booties onto the brake/clutch lever plungers? I don’t want to rip them open and I’ve tried with a bent-tip pick, tiny Allen wrenches & ring pliers, still no salt.

    <insert favorite euphemism here>

  2. entirely pull out the rubber boots (they will not break), then fit them correctly over the nipples.

Put the whole thing back after that ...

that's what I did on mine

  3. A touch of Vaseline (or KY Jelly:)) would help ease entry.

  4. I couldn’t get the boots out, but I did get the plunger in with the ring pliers.

Unfortunately, the adjustment knob hits the hand guard, so I am not going to be able to use my expensive CF levers or the anodized aluminum ones that are en route. I contemplated ditching the hand guards, but I like warm, protected fingers, plus I just paid plenty for the CF upper & lower hand guards and don’t want to have to solve for turn signals and reservoir mounts. I’ve thrown enough good money at this issue and I’m going to try to get some of it back.

  5. Stupid question, but why do you want to take them out?

It's a dust seal and I'd imagine that removal requires destroying them and, again assuming here, they are an interference fit.

    Not cheap either:

From memory, when I refitted the levers on my 1200DVT, I located the plungers into the seal and then lined up the bolt afterwards, not the other way round.

  6. I put a little grease on the plunger and after a lot of swearing it did finally go in. I think I also used a pair of dental tweezers to open the boot to srtart them

  7. I put a small flat headed screwdriver, inside and popped them out, prior fitting new levers, very easy to do.

  8. ^ This, if you look at the second picture on the ebay link, you can see the recess on the reverse side of the seal. I'm guessing that's why they are there.

  9. That threaded section sticking out doesn't look right. You say it is the adjustment knob but it is not a knob. It shouldn't be sticking out like that. Did the lever require some assembly by yourself?
I'd like to see a picture of it off the bike as it is difficult to get context form the picture you posted.

  10. its cheaper to buy KTM Part
    KTM-Ersatzteil 61013008000
, half the price, same Brembo part

  11. It’s nine months since I fitted my levers, and I’m only just getting over the torment of that rubber boot! But I just used a bit of grease, which did the trick.

  12. It’s the shaft for the adjustment knob; the knob screws onto it. The stock lever’s adjustment knob is in a different place.

Here are a couple of pics to illustrate - one of the CNC lever showing the knob on the shaft and another showing the space that doesn’t exist for it between the lever and handguard.

  13. Yes I see now. I've never seen an adjuster like that on a lever. I wonder if they said it was suitable for your Multistrada? If so you have a good case for returning it for a refund as it plainly won't fit.

  14. It’s supposed to fit the Multi - they mention that it might not work with handguards, but it’s in reference to the length of the lever (they even state it at 190mm). Length is not the issue here though.

  15. I bent up a paper clip to help open up the hole, plus lots of grease. Took bloody ages! Wish I'd known the boot came out!

  16. I agree that it doesn’t look like the adjustment screw would work with the guard. I’m sure it needs a ‘top’ adjustment. Do you have the option of returning the levers and getting the Evotech or Gilles levers?

  17. I have another package coming from CNC with another pair of levers that I expect will have the same issue; if so, I will ask for a refund of both.

  18. Does your sit further up the pin?... I greased them before putting them on and they went in quite freely. I did think the looked ‘pushed in’ but guessed that was how they should be ??
