916 Frame No. Etching

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Alan Murphy, Jan 26, 2021.

  1. I’ve got a frame that has, due to an over enthusiastic blaster, lost the depth on the etched frame number.
Anyone know where you can get a frame number etched as per original?

    Thanks

    Al

  2. What about buying a Dremel engraver and carefully retracing over the original numbers and letters whereby making them slightly deeper and more visible. Just a thought. :)

  3. Nearly 20 years ago I had a 900SS that suffered from the common cracked frame. After a lot of correspondence with Ducati UK they agreed to replace the frame but the dealer had to do the work to swap it. After further correspondence they agreed that it if it was ok with the dealer I could take the old frame to them and swap it for the replacement which Ducati UK would end out, the old frame being returned.
This worked out ok except that the new frame had no VIN and the dealer didn't have the gear to do it. They sent me round to the Honda dealer who did the job in less than 10 minutes with correct dot pattern characters.
You could try asking the main dealers in your area, explaining the circumstances and one of them might help.

  4. Thanks for the reply, I’d assumed it would be a specialist type of engraving.
    I’ll make some enquiries

  5. Letter sets are available, I just sent the first set I found to show an example of dotted punch sets

  6. I'm sure they are but by the time he's bought the whole set it will be quite expensive for a one off job. And there is also the difficulty of getting all the characters aligned so that it looks like original and not a faked re-stamp. It might be ok as a last resort.

  7. Thanks for your help lads, I’m gonna go down the dealer route first to see if I can find one with the necessary tools and experience.
Also I can get a receipt so that should help eliminate any issues of authenticity if I do sell the bike on in the future

  8. What media was used by your ‘blaster’ ? Andy

  9. Off the top of head I believe it was sand.
He was told to do the head stock by hand!!!
What can you do? Once he’s done it there’s no going back!
It’s salvageable as the number is still there but it’s faint

  10. That is very generous of you, I’m not so sure I would have been as forgiving or tolerant. Seen a few programmes recently and it would appear crushed nut shells is the media of choice for stripping back paint finish without damaging the surface underneath. Andy

  11. There’s nothing he can do to restore it once it’s gone, I wouldn’t let him near it and the chances of getting a penny off some mush in a lock up are nil, not worth the stress!!

  12. Using sand as the blasting medium for “Sandblasting” is not very clever as it produces micro-silica which does not do your lungs any good at all. Plus, it’s illegal!

  13. Sand has long been banned in blasting circles, I imagine he used a course Aluminium oxide which is great for removing paint and rust on frames and metalwork but not the sort of thing to go blasting around the delicate frame number stamping location.
