996 Fogarty Replica 996

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Steve Whitton, Jan 31, 2021.

  1. This may have been asked before but here we go
How many different genuine Fogarty 996 replicas have been produced by Ducati
There seems to be the first and original ones that there were 202 made, these are the ones with the Deitsman logo on the lower fairing below the Ducati Perfomance logo
But then I have seen a few with the Info Strada logo on the lower fairing blow the Ducati Perfomance logo and the seat unit has green and white stripes running along the side of the seat pad, some of these even have the Fogarty Replica plaques on the headstock
Then there seems to be a third bike produced with SPS/F on the plaque which I am lead to believe is a late factory bike released in Europe
Could someone clarify any of the above as I am a little confused
    Thanks
    Steve

  2. The 916 SPS (996cc) Foggy Rep (202) was a UK only bike. The later 996SPS with Foggy graphics is very different. Legend says the SPS/F is a ‘Factory’ bike not a ‘Foggy’. Andy

  3. Hi Andy
Can you elaborate on what is very different with the later foggy SPS, are they genuine or a second edition from Ducati

  4. The original 916SPS ‘Foggy’ was to homologate what was called the’ Kyalami’ frame for WSBK racing amongst other things. The later 996SPS ‘Foggy’ was numbered but not sure it was limited like the 916SPS. The 996SPS however came fully loaded with Ohlins and was supposed to be a fire breathing monster. IMO, the 916SPS is definitely the collectors bike but in reality, there may well be far less of the 996SPS model made despite it being available worldwide. Happy for the community to add or correct if I’ve missed anything or got it wrong. Andy

  5. as Andy says there was the original 916sps(996cc) foggy rep 202 made for wskb

the later 996sps pista (track or race) was suppossed to be a factory race replica not acually a foggy rep

    so i belive

  6. I thought somewhere along the time when Foggy was racing there was a big sticking point of him resigning a new deal and there a was a shortfall of £200,000 in his demands with either side giving in. I think that’s where and how one of the foggy replica bikes became to be made and sold to the public. I think the story goes something like Moto Cinelli who where the UK importers at the time added either £1000 or £2000 to the sale of the 916/996 bikes and turned them into Foggy replica bikes. The added cost and profit for each bike went straight into making up the shortfall in Fogarty’s wage demands.

  7. That's what i heard but also they'd trouble selling them at that RRP & sat around the showroom for a long period, how times have changed.

  8. I guess the extra £2000 on each bike would have been a fair bit back in the day, so a lot of people would have bought the cheaper version.
Can anyone remember the exact prices for the various models and while Ducati then were much more expensive than the Japanese brands making them even dearer with the Foggy rep I guess made them harder to shift for the dealers.
Maybe a little like now with the 1299 Final Edition that appear to be in many many showrooms unsold
considering it’s price increase compared to the other models in the Panigale range.

  9. I've an original bill of sale sitting here for the 916sps / £18750 06/97.My last fireblade which was in 96 & i think i paid for memory £7650,retailed another £1200 on top.

  10. You did well there.
I managed to get mine for 19,500 down from 21,500.

  11. Nice information, I certainly never realised they were that expensive when they were released.
Maybe Ducati made a very nice profit on them bikes considering the price all them years ago.

  12. If my memory is not failing a 1997 916 Biposto was £13,250.
My new grey import Biposto came in Oct that year at £9,500.
Around the same time the dealer price had dropped to £11,750.
I didn't buy the SPS new, (7 years old and under £7k) I think they were around the £18,000 mark in '98. I have the original bill of sale for mine which was also a grey import at £15,000 ish. I will check the exact figure later.
Foggys were about £22,000. I was talking to a magazine journalist who was testing the second Foggy rep in the UK "Foggy got his yesterday and Mark Forsyth is testing this one tomorrow" is how I remember the conversation at the petrol station in Bourne. I was on my way back from having my Biposto serviced at Baines.

  13. Here’s one for you chaps, a little scary if you think about. I’ve just checked the money values through the years. It goes a little like this.
If the Ducati 916 sps was £21,000 new in 1997 as stated above, in today’s money according to the Bank of England calculator conversion charts it would be ??? Wait for it !!!, a whopping £39,000 so all them years ago they probably only went to the people who really really desired them at the time.
Very interesting looking through the years at prices.

  14. New "Foggy" reps were list priced at £21,500, there were 202* of them made and the UK importer was Moto Cinelli, Hoss Elm was the owner/MD.
IIRC? The list price for a new 916/996SPS was around £17,500 at the time, but "Grey Imports" could be had for quite a bit less...

*Foggy was presented with one, another went into the factory museum and the rest of the 200 went on sale in the UK.

At that slightly over the top asking price a lot of the 200 didn't rush off the showroom floors, 2 of my mates bought a pair of them from Merlin Ducati (in Wales) for £17,500 each.
They came with 5 spoke wheels in Black and a full rep' of the genuine race 996's sticker kit, to be fitted by the selling dealers.

  15. As a comparison, my *onda SP2 [2002] was just over £10k new and I bought at 3months old and 300 miles on clock for £7250...

  16. Sorry forgot to mention but i'm the second owner and it looks like he paid over the odds for it reading other folks posts.

  17. Nice information regarding the price’s, I think the 200 bikes with the added price were the batch that went into making up the shortfall in Fogarty’s wage demands which was a big sticking point at the time.
Just a very expensive bike when you look back through the years and the equivalent money in today’s money as I posted earlier.

Maybe wrong but from the books I have read this seem correct

  20. If it was mine, these days I'd save 10k and buy a non Foggy 996 sps, or 7k and buy the 996R for sale on here.
