Diavel 1260 Diavel All Year Riding?

Discussion in 'Diavel & XDiavel' started by LeDuke, Feb 4, 2021.

  1. Hello all,

    I am considering buyng a 1260 Diavel S.
Ive scoured forums, youtube and the like and havent found anyone that can give me an opinion on what Im looking for.
    Which is:
"Can the 1260 Diavel be ridden all year round?"
Im not talking about snow and black Ice. But I mean, rain or heavy rain, cold windy conditions, greasy slippery conditions, around 8 degrees C. Has anyone done this? Or does it regularly?
Can the bike/tyres handle this? Would you that have one ride it all year or not?
And finally, when the weather is lovely, and the cotton is high, can you ride it spirited enough without dragging the footpegs. I would hate to have to splash out on rear sets just to get a little fun out of her.
To give some perspective, I test rode a BMW R9T and was dragging the Foot Pegs within 15 mins. And I wasnt pushing hard at all, just enjoying myself. If i was a hooligan, I would buy a Monster! :p
I know a multi would be more suited for all year riding, but I dont want a Multi.
Let me know your opinions please, I value your feedback.
    Thanks

  2. Heavy rain? Cold windy conditions? Around 8C you say? That’s a British summer so the answer is yes it’s suitable.

And to drag the foot pegs you’d have to be over 20 stone in weight and really cranked over.

  3. The 1260s is absolutely stunning... I want one myself but don't want to p/x the Panigale so have to wait.

The question is, as with all motorcycle purchases. Do you want to open your garage and see one parked there? If the answer is yes, get it bought!

  4. My girlfriend has been riding her 1200 Diavel for the last 9 years, all weathers, all year round. Cleaning down after a ride in shitty conditions is crucial. She rides with enthusiasm and has tracked hers twice but she is petite and finds pushing on through bends is hard work. The few times I have ridden it, not for any length of time mind, I found it responsive and secure. Found myself waving to another rider as I overtook them on a large, high speed, ring road roundabout doing about 60mph and the bike was rock solid. Andy

  5. Toro mate, you cracked me up, Ive been away from the UK for so long now that I hesitated when you said 20 stone.
    Im 15.5 Stone!! Shat myself.
So it can be ridden in high spirits and its rideable in the Winter. Might add heated grips if I can find them...
    Max, I also have a Pani. 1299 S.
I hate riding that in the winter. Such a waste of a lovely bike.

  6. Is there a more winter tyre available for this bike. Or is our only option the Rosso 3 from Pirelli?
I dont think anyone else makes one that size.

  7. Michelin do a 240, not tried one as have preferred the Pirelli. Andy

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  8. I had a gen 1, great commuter in all weather.
I will buy another when I have the free cash.

  9. The last ride out for me was in torrential rain!!! 2019 1260, felt okay to me but i do go steady in the rain!! i have touched the right footpeg down but that was in warm sunny conditions (remember them!) while riding with mate on a superduke who believes speed limits are a starting point!!:)

  10. I run the Michelin’s on my XDiavel.. I know tyres are a very personal thing but I much prefer them to the Pirellis.

  11. What sort of mileage do you get out of the front tyre ? Andy

  12. The one that’s on at the moment has done 4K, and I’d guess there’s another 2k left in it.

I don’t think there’s much difference in wear rates to the pirellis, but from my seat of the pants feeling the Michelin’s feel more consistent as they wear.

What do I mean by that?. The only way I can describe it, is that as the Pirellis got more and more worn, my confidence and trust in them reduced significantly.
That hasn’t happened with the Michelin’s. The pair that are on now have done 4K, as I say the front has a bit left in it, but the rear is on the wear bars so I’ll be changing both before we’re allowed out again. But even when the tyres are fairly worn, they still felt good. When the Pirellis were fairly worn at 5k, I really didn’t like the feeling.

It’s a shame there isn’t more choice in these sizes, but for me from now on, I’ll stick with the Michelin’s.

  13. Thanks for the feedback Paul, must say am sligthtly worried about the pegs touching down especially as im not in the under 15 stone department.
Im always careful in the rain also, and I suppose anything is better than a track focused 1299 in the rain , which is what I have now.
I know its apples and oranges, but my shortlist has been whittled down to the 1260 Diavel or new S1000 XR.
The BM logically is a better bike for winter etc... Its just, im not a fan of inline 4s and the Diavel looks so damn good!!

  14. Only managed to put 400 miles on my 1260s as I purchased middle of 2020, so not managed to touch down the pegs but did give it a pushed ride on several occasions. When I purchased I was over 21 stone and once the suspension was set for two up as per me manual rode a lot smoother that standard. I came from a speed triple and tuono to the diavel. The ride is different and that’s what I wanted, looking to slow down a little these days, and take a more relaxed ride, but when I want the power have it. I now weigh 16 stone (and still going down I hope) and the ride is ever better as I can tweak the suspension far greater as I a not near the limits.
The diavel is never going to corner like a sports bike, as you won’t have the lean angle, all depends what your looking for.

I love the looks of the diavel and was one of the reasons I went for the ducati over anything else. Just have to adjust how you ride a little. If you are on the fence best to wait till you can ride a demo.

  15. Mate first of all well played. 21 stone to 16 stone is a fair acheivement! Impressive.
Thanks for the comments. I agree with you that you should not treat or consider it to be a sports bike. Im keeping the 1299 so will have it for when i want that sort of thing.
Unfortunately where i am based now the chances of finding a demo are next to nothing. All my bike and cars for that matter are bought blind.
The only resource I have are you guys, youtube and articles.

  16. Thanks, and I bought the diavel with out a test ride due to lockdown. I always loved the looks and thankfully it rides great, the only quirk being the gear box, it’s more positive than both my triumph or aprilia, it didn’t take long to get used to it and it was the cause of a few false neutrals from 4 to 5, and in all honesty I was fighting the QS rather than using it to complement the changes.

must admit it’s cost me a fair bit in accessories as the rizoma and DP parts look amazing and fit so well.

if you are keeping a sports bike as well then you get the best of both.

  17. Nice choice to have the beautiful 1299 or the stunning 1260.... I do lust after a 1299 but would need a lotto win to have both!!:p

  18. I know Paul, first world problems right?
