998 998 Starting Help...

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Jimbob998, Feb 13, 2021.

  1. Hi,

I am back to the forum after a 2 year break and have finally got the 998 rebuilt back to a point of starting after shelving the project due to the chaos of kids....

I am getting full ignition, fuel pump priming, lights, horn etc but no attempt to crank when pushing start button. Have disconnected coil plug from starter solenoid and I can get 12v+ when I push start button, but I am not getting a -ve to the plug!?
I’ve checked fuses, relays and the bi-pass on my side stand is confirmed to ground.
    Any ideas anyone?

On a similar note I have a spare 2 core drop off from the main right handside harness near multi pin round connector. I am adamant it was just taped off and cable tied back when I bought the bike, but don’t know if it should be doing something. Previous guy did have a power commander which I’ve removed when I stripped everything.

    Any help appreciated
    Cheers

  2. Update- The spare 2 core loom is part of the right hand control / headlight harness that’s comes back down the right hand-side to meet main harness with round multipin plug. I can’t identify it on a schematic...?

  3. not sure if this is a/ correct for yours b/ contains the info you need, I can't even find the starter motor on it..

  4. Thanks Chris,

Start motor is top right ‘M’ next to solenoid. I’ve tried to follow that schematic but to know avail ...

  5. As marked:-

    -ve side is my problem...

  6. doh! - so 09 is solenoid, you could begin with checking for 12 volts at the input of the solenoid while starter button depressed. (there are many different approaches, this is just one route).

The infamous "yellow" relay seems to come to mind but a little hesitant to add more as not sure how much 998 has in common with 996.

  7. Yes, done that Chris.. I tried to explain that in my opening thread post (poorly haha)
I am getting that signal there when I depress the start button, but only when I use a different ground separate from the plug -ve.

  8. someone hopefully will come along and relate the circuit path from memory, but i'm sure you will be able to fathom this out. So have you followed the path of the "correct" negative to determine if it's a conventional negative, or whether it needs enabling via ECU, relay, etc?

    EDIT
I can see that the neg side you've indicated goes to "38" and also to "SSS" which i'm guessing could be starter switch? The fact that it goes off to battery negative shows it's an earth that only needs the "SSS" to enable so should be simple to check and test?

  9. Think I’ve found it! looks like there must of been an old immobiliser spliced in near the solenoid and the ground was cut ... will keep you posted on start up

  10. Starter is via switched earth on ECU pin 38

  11. Can you get the bike to turn over by bridging the HT leads on the starter solenoid?

  12. those bare wires are probably aftermarket splice to a feed power to a quickshifter or a sat nav
a Power commander would have taken power from the injectors (mine did)

are you 100% the side stand is shorted? i ask as you have indicated a wire thats faulty which routes directly to it
if you find you are not getting 12v at the solenoid switch input it could be the safety circuits
the ECU wont let the bike start unless all these conditions are met
    ignition is on obvs
the side stand is up (im not sure but i think its open circuit with side stand down, short with stand up)
the kill switch is set to run
    the neutral sensor is lit.
