18000 Miles Is That Ok ?

Discussion in 'Supersport (2016 onwards)' started by Steve Paxman, Feb 18, 2021.

  1. I have seen an well priced unmolested 2 owner S in great condition, full history and 18000 miles. I have no experience of these engines. Has any body else got a few miles on their bike and are these engines good for it ? Cheers

  2. IMO, there is no reason to anticipate dire consequences from that sort of mileage. If from the service history you can see a significant proportion of the mileage has been long journeys, the likelihood is less stress on the engine than a lot of stop/start short journeys. If you are buying with the anticipation of doing lots of miles, my advice would be to put a something by each month for the inevitable high costs of the valve inspection service and any potential age related component failure. Girlfriend bought a ‘17 S with the specific intention of putting touring miles on it before lockdown intervened. I think I’d be happy to pay less for a looked after higher mileage bike than pay more for something that hasn’t been used. Andy

  3. About the same miles as mine. I have owned it from new. Runs just the same as the day that I bought it and has never let me down.

  4. Cheers, That was my thinking plenty about with under a thousand miles for 2k more. I will probably do no more than 3-4k a year with a couple of Belgium trips thrown in. Plus I have another bike to ride too. Plus it is bog standard meaning I can do my own mods if I want to. Thanks again

  5. Check the “full service history” includes the 18k desmo if it’s on the mileage. That’s the big service and pricey to complete.

  6. Belts should be changed at 5 years or 18K, mine will be 5 years next year so I’ll be saving up for this. If we are allowed out this year I’m planning the Pyrenees again so mine will be up to 12K. They’re supposed to be used, that’s my take anyway.
If it’s had the belt service then go for it, they’re great bikes.

  7. Well off on a long drive to Malvern tomorrow to view the 18000 mile 939 S. They have promised the Desmo service as part of the deal. but as the miles are relatively high, want to check the condition. Wish me luck.

  11. ...or very resoanble at a certain Ducati service centre :)

I don't think you have ridden a Duke until its got 15K miles + on it, not freed up enough.

  14. Had mine serviced today and chatting to the guy belts are changed at 5 years, Desmo service at 18K miles not 5 years, so that’s a relief as mine is 5 years old next year and has only done 8700 miles
