?
  1. Good - they help the flow of traffic and give information on overhead displays

  2. Bad - they’re dangerous if you breakdown on temporary ‘hard shoulders’

  1. It doesn't matter how good the technology is, when you add the human element into the equation and NO off road safety zone your up the creek without the paddle.

  2. I've had someone run into my broken down vehicle.
Despite me trying to get their attention further up the motorway.
    He was lucky to survive.

  3. Shite idea. Lost count of the amount of near misses or worse that I’ve seen.

I can’t understand how they ever thought it was a good idea.

They spent ages buggering about with the m20 near me and it’s made absolutely fuck all difference to daily traffic. Ridiculous waste of money.

  4. No need for an MP's discussion, or a billion pound review, enquiry or whatever they call a the trough these days. Get rid of dumbfcuk Mways, and widen them where required.

  5. For me, smart motorways have worked. Living in Farnborough Hampshire, the M3 was a wreck in rush hour with queues often miles back at both junctions. Yes we had to go through 4-5 years of pain of 50mph average speed camera zones, but when it was all finished, having the extra lane has been incredible. Before it would be stationary traffic very often, now I'll happily take a constant 50-60mph when they turn the camera's on

  6. When this came in I was at the AA still. We would lose people, too many people, already in hardshoulder accidents. This made it worse. Don't that stats also show that more crashes occur on these stretches than anywhere else? Could be they did before, but if so it hasn't solved it.

  7. is it the extra lane or everyone travelling slower? I moved a few years ago but M3/M4/A34 were regular roads for me and it never mattered what limit was in place: it was always stationary in the same junctions at the same times.

  8. Anyone who says yes to this needs publicly shaming and banning

  9. Best thing ever! 3.5 hr drive to London from mine. A 5 or 8hr shift at work. Another 3.5hr drive home only to see the signs on the M1 telling us to slow down to 40 as there’s queuing traffic ahead. Waste of time and money. Wankers

  10. I see this countless times on the m20. 9 times out of 10 there’s no obstruction or reason for it.

I’ve even seen it in the middle of the night haha

  11. I absolutely refuse to use the inner lane on a dumb motorway, I treat it the same a a hard shoulder.
Stay safe and treat these the same a a normal motorway.

  12. I commuted round the m25 for 3 years on my 899 and I reckon it's knocked about 10 years off my life with stress lol
Ridiculously dangerous and the information they provide overhead can only be described as misleading (at best!).

  13. Its the No.1 recommended tip to avoid hitting a broken down vehicle on a motorway near you!
