This brings back nightmares of my sprag clutch going in my 1981 Darmah! Comforting to know that after 40 years Ducati have still not got it right!
Always been a bit crap, but I'm given to understand there is a better quality replacement, I'm surprised I haven't been inundated with replies about it.
I haven’t heard of a better replacement. There has been discussion about a cheaper alternative spring but unsure if it is “better”. It is vitally important to ensure that your battery is in good condition as a low/weak battery can exacerbate wear on the sprag assembly.
The place to find a better quality replacement is at a bearings supplier. If you can take your old one along, they should be able find you a better quality item
Theres talk of a ktm part being the same, but I opted to replace sprag, flange and starter wheel for £372 inc vat from snells in 2016. Took me about 2hrs on 1198.
Hi Do you still have the original sprag in your bike? If so, then since then the parts have been revised and hopefully improved. I have a thread on here somewhere comparing old and the latest parts. What can be seen visually anyway. Tolerances may have been changed but this is hard to see. Best to replace the whole sprag assembly too as the interfacing parts will have worn. Like others have said make sure the starting electrical system is strong too as a weak system seems to deteriorate the sprag assembly faster.
