Hi Putting a ducati monster together. I am stuck on the wire harness can anyone tell me where this bolts to? It comes off the main harness but is not the positive for the battery.
PM me an email address and I'll send you a pdf copy of the Ducati workshop manual. There are diagrams in it of how to route the harness etc. Nasher.
Hi Masher. No they are fitted. This one comes off the loom. But I can't see or remember where it went. The bike has been completely stripped and i am now in the process of putting back together. Foolishly I didn't take any notes of the wiring harness.
Failed to send it by email as it's too big, 47MB But I downloaded it from here: https://www.carlsalter.com/ducati-service-manuals.asp Down near the bottom: https://www.carlsalter.com/download.asp?p=1502 Nasher.
Thanks Nasher. That is helpful. Do you think that my go as an earth under the battery? I already have one (although smaller gauge wire) bolted in to that area but i believe I have inherited a bike that has been chopped about a bit on the electrics and it looks like a bodged wire.
That doesn't bear any resemblance to my 97 M900, but there again it has been butchered in the past by several owners. Could it be the main -ve connection to the battery itself?
Hi Nasher Thanks. The positive is connected on the battery that then connects to 2 positive on a relay. 1 goes to the solenoid the to the. If I connect that wire to positive there is some life. The front lights work. it I connect to negative nothing. I am getting a bit frustrated now. I am not a mechanic but a computer and network engineer. I bought this bike due to no ECU and thought it would be logical. I was warned about Italian electrics. lol
Looking at the diagram it looks like the 12v HT feed to the starter solenoid. If you use a meter to check continuity it should have it with the +12v lead connection at the battery.
Thanks for your help I am sure that the loom has been chopped about. I the wire is giving 7.7v oddly. Looking at the rest of the loom I can see a negative connection made up from the starter switch. I may buy a used good loom and go from there. The problem i have is that I bought the bike working. No electrical problems at all. Lesson learned the hard way I suppose.
Okay Striped the harness again, repaired all connections and gave it a sonic bath. I have to say it looks great now. However I have been looking on everything on the net. I am just running up blind alleys. Is there a chance this tail bolts on to the ht plate that the coils are on? It seems most people have not gone as far as me. I really want this bike started soon. I have fully rebuilt the carbs, cleaned and renewed most nuts and bolts. It would be good if i could see another monster. Also my one has hydrolic hoses the cool the carbs that use the oil from the engine.
Hi I am afraid not. The one your talking about it an earth that bolts on from the engine block to the rear sets. (Foot rest)
Update. Sorted. It turns out it is the main ground from the harness that bolts under the air filter box under the battery. I took the harness out again. Stripped it and cleaned it. Found loads of cutting about from previous owners and one of them had made another ground/negative from an old ht lead. That's what threw me. Also I was getting a lot of odd voltages due to the poor wiring and corrosion. Lots of agonising evenings. Anyway it started first time which means all my carb rebuild and engine valve cleaning was not in vain . Thanks for your help guys it sort of kept me on logical thinking.
Yes mate. It all adds up now. I inherited someone who likes soldering irons and in so tape. Really thought of giving up. Put it on another forum as well. Similar answers. Made me think logic. Also the wire was giving out 7volts to even more confuse me. Turns out bad earth s and wrong awg soldered in. Harness totally rebuilt now.
