Ducati 796 Won't Energise The Solenoid.

  1. Hi there,

I have starting issues with my 2012 Monster 796.
Battery voltage is a bit low at 12V and it looks to be the original so that will need to be replaced. The problem I have is the solenoid won’t energise. I have wired the solenoid directly to the battery and it does work.

    1. Are the stand switch and the neutral switch connected in series with the solenoid coil?
The neutral switch shows green on the dash.
    2. Will the clever electronics prevent the solenoid actuating if the voltage is too low?
I have shorted out the solenoid and the engine does turn over all be it a bit sluggish.

    Any ideas please?

  2. The solenoid is activated by the ECU providing a ground when the starter button is pressed. Providing the bike is in neutral OR the clutch lever is pulled in OR if the stand is down and it's in gear. You have a neutral light so the switch would appear to work. Stand switch should have no effect if the bike is in neutral but worth checking both.

  3. Sounds like you need some decent cables from Exact Start. They’re heavier duty and you just touch the button and boom!

  4. It won't matter a jot what the cables are if the solenoid isn't being energised.

  5. a good battery is always important, but it could be an issue with the immobiliser,
sometime the antennae in the key surround fails or it falls down below the line of the key and stops working.
i dont know if your bike has an immobiliser light offhand

do you have the code card?

  6. Yes it could. Although immobiliser faults should show the EOBD light on the dash and an error.
It might be worth fully charging the battery before investigating further.
