Track Bike Dilemma

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by carson, Mar 27, 2021.

  1. Id have went with the RS2E map if I hadn’t lost heart with mines. I bought it and went straight to Jerez on it (met Monners there) and that’s when the electrical gremlins showed up but nothing too serious.
I then went to Portimao and that was a disaster, constant canbus issues and I couldn’t get the bike to handle, it wouldn’t hold a line, front end was chattering like hell. I think the canbus fault was playing havoc with the DDC.
Managed to trace it to some wiring on the right hand side and fixed it so I thought... Then went to Almeria and again same issues. Guys at track plugged the diagnostic kit into it, no faults, loads of messing around and a wasted trip. I ended up finding out that it had already been at bmw for the same and managed to trace the fault to some more wiring.
I’d lost heart in it by that time and it had to go.

  2. didn't you have a battery connector issue at Jerez ?

I mean, it sucks yes, but this is not BMW specific problem can happen to any bike.

why didnt you remove DDC anyway ?

  3. Yeah had the battery connection issue at Jerez. Didn’t remove the DDC because I didn’t think there was a need to, I’d heard that adding the front potentiometer made a big difference but I don’t think it did.

  4. Fuck me..... by the sounds of it Rob, you Sir, need a super reliable Doocardi back in your life.....
All the issues in this thread make the V4S seem like a bulletproof gixxer!!
What about an 1100 Aprilia? I didn’t realise the R1 was so chocolatey. Heard about the transmission issues and snapping crankshafts but that’s nowt to worry about
Picked mine up this morning after some PPF.... check the Porsche! Sounded ace!!

  5. That looks the bollocks mate!
I’ve not had any issues with any of the 8 R1s I’ve owned, ok the old 98 could throw you a curveball on the electrics now and again but I sorted that eventually and my 4C8 tried to kill me every time I rode it but that was more down to my lack of ability rather than the bike.
The Apes a lovely looking bike, I loved my Tuono but not as a track bike lol.

  6. well I hate to be rude but all these are non-issues. if you dont take time to read about and do the setup any bike would be shiet. R1 stock is as crap as BMW stock.

Potentiometer is not a magical wand, it only gives you ability to separate Comp and Rebound in DDC forks that obviously requires further tuning and re-springing. Thats exactly what Monners was doing to Jerez to get to 1.51 before he was ran over.

Data gives you ability to setup the bike. It universally applies to any bike out there.

  7. The trouble with ex race bikes is they have often been ducked with.

  8. it’s not non issues when the bike becomes so unreliable that it starts to lose you days. Sorry to be rude but you don’t know what happened so your input is irrelevant.
I lost 4 days at 2 separate tracks due to canbus issues, I had the bike setup prior to Almeria and then the guys (a very reputable team) were at Almeria assisting and couldn’t get to the bottom of the issues either.
Just recognised your username and remember speaking to you at Almeria and know you from that other forum that’s best not discussed.

Thanks for your opinion but like I said, I won’t be buying a Gen 3

  9. I’m looking forward to a TD at Cadwell on the KTM :D Just a ride there and go thang....

  10. Is it a road bike only day?

  11. you bought the bike second-hand, no idea what was there could be anything.

I mean c'mon, hoping that DDC will magically get you fast lap times without doing anything to tune it and then blaming Gen3 platform on 'electrical gremlins' because it was chattering too much is a joke.

Panigale V4 is chattering a lot in default setup, ask Dave.

your Gen4 issues is something else, I can't say anything, BMW did fuck it up.

    I wasnt at Almeria.

  12. Bmw electronic suspension is shite compared to Ducati.

  13. Hang on, rewind a minute. Now I know you like an argument but read the whole thread. I’ve just told you that I had the bike set up properly.
The issues I had were canbus issues that came from an electrical fault that was sorted by BMW.
When I took the bike to Jerez I didn’t have any issue apart from the battery issue that I already stated was nothing major. The handling issues started at Portimao at the same time as the canbus issues and continued at Almeria. Not once did I say that the I expected the DDC to give me magical time. How’s about you wind your neck in and take this over to the other forum with your like minded friends.

  14. It’s well documented that the BMW DDC is poor on track mate

  15. Nah, but you can still rock up on a road bike. The wanker in me wants to overtake people with my reg plates flapping in the breeze
