New Bike Time!

  1. Another big vote for R1’s here, I back to backed it with an RSV4 in 2018. Rode the RSV4 first and loved it but had some annoying things. Then rode the R1 expecting to hate it and somehow came away thinking it’s probably the bike I’d buy! The ridiculously tall gearing was hard to get used to though on the road, stalled it twice in the first few miles, especially as off idle it still sounds a bit twin like so you can get fooled.

I didn’t like the brakes though, does the Brembo RCS sort it? If so it’s a reasonably cheap mod to sort the brakes. It was so fast though, jeez

  2. Still toying with one for a road bike but worried it may be a little too much and my local Yamaha’s dealer doesn’t have test bike.

It would be as a second bike and with half a dozen track days a year, so I could put up with a few compromises.
(Although not sure I could bring myself to sell my tuono )

  3. The brakes were always my worry when I was thinking of buying one and I knew it was going to be their weak point. The R1M was completely standard when I got it and comes with braided lines on the front as such. When I bought it during lockdown I had it out for a spirited run and remember thinking what is everyone talking about. Easily good enough for road use and the only reason that I put an RCS on was because I had a brand new one from my Gen 3 track bike.

The R1 track bike I thought would highlight the braking issues but I've been mega impressed with them. I don't know what pads are in it and tried to ask the previous owner without success but they're brilliant. It's got an RCS on too and the ABS delete with some Motul RBF660 fluid. I've never been sore on the brakes but they're brilliant. I had put some money aside to fit Brembo discs and a set of M4 calipers before I'd ridden it because of the feedback I'd heard but I don't think it needs them now.

  4. I sold my 2016 Tuono Factory a year ago, it was an amazing bike and couldn't fault it at all! I just missed the sportsbike for the road as well. The R1 is probably the most "focused" bike I've ridden and isn't the most comfortable as a road bike, but if you like a spirited ride on the road then it's great fun.

I'll be honest and say as an all round sportsbike that can do it all then the S1000RR can't be beaten. It's mega comfortable with loads of room, heated grips, mega fast (mines is doing 202RWHP with a conservative map on it) and it's awesome on the track...but it doesn't look or sound like an R1 :) and the BMW build quality is appalling, seriously. I think I've got all of the reliability issues with mines sorted as well.

  5. That was why I didn’t get the new beamer mate. All I’ve heard about is problems ranging from irritating to dangerous.

That off the back of my gen3 which was terribly unreliable. Brilliant product. Made out of cheese.

  6. You probably know the history mate but mines has had loads of issues, 2 cracked rear wheels, leaking brakes... you know the score but I think they’re all sorted now but I bought a gen 3 Beemer for track on the back of how good the gen 4 was and it was a pig

  8. Added a few more bits of carbon to the R1M. The carbon under tray is sexual

Got some carbon ram air covers as well and wee run out to Inveraray

  15. R1's are very tall,860mm ..just to put this in perspective a KTM 1090Adventure seat height is 850mm, whilst the 1290SuperAdventure is 860mm.
I am 5'7" with 31" inseam and tbh was struggling when having to reverse out. Luckily the seat is very narrow near the tank. Nevertheless, a cracking bike in every aspect. (bare the brakes)
I am split between a 2020 r1m or a v4s...also keeping an eye out on the new rsv4.

  16. RSV4. Another bike I can’t ride.

  17. Looks amazing.....

Saw one in a showroom window (17 plate with less than 2k miles on it), on my ride today. Came back and had dangerous thoughts about exchanging my tuono

  19. I have the RSV4 1100 and although it's very tall (not as tall as the R1) i manage it.

I have a 29" inside leg measurement so i have to think about where i pull up, road camber etc and have one leg down ready. On the bike it feels tiny, fitting someone my size perfectly.
