National Motorcyclists Council

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by WeeDavey, Mar 30, 2021.

  1. Just noticed this new body has been put together to represent our interests to the govt. A fairly diverse group but if they can get their act together something good may come of it but I won’t hold my breath. Don’t think motorcyclists have much leveridge in govt. circles.

  2. Interesting, thanks for sharing

  3. The first thing we should be asking the toerags is why are we paying £93.00 a year in road fund licence for over 600cc engines when some cars don't pay that amount which are much more heavy in weight, what happened to the green friendly environment think tank.

  4. I'll 2nd that Mate, scandalous! Boils ma pish every time I do it, and with 3 big bikes in the garage it fair mounts up, each one doing less than 5k per annum hardly stresses or damages the road network.

Perhaps they could introduce a multiple road tax for multi bike owners, that would be a bit fairer.

  5. I guess whatever system they introduce there're going to be losers and winners on the highways.Scrapping the licence and maybe a new system with tolls on the roads would be a fairer way forward for all concerned, or would that be abused by the government once the folk had fully converted.

  6. Put a bit more tax on fuel and scrap Road fund license. You ride/drive a lot you pay more simple!

  7. Would be good to have one body for parlimentarians to discusss issues with. So I'll kee positive.
Looking at the membership of the new NMC, that is quite a diverse bunch, with different viewpoints and ideologies. Difficult to see them having a common view on much.
Perhaps they should invite the Hell's Angels on board to cover that side of motorcycling too? ;)

  8. You'd have thought they're familiar and on first name terms with that group of people from their friday night cocaine drop offs.

  9. Have some members of MAG branched out?

    Nasher.

  10. The UK National Motorcyclists Council comprises 5 organisations which claim to represent a combined membership of 100,000. Given a total of 1.36 million motorcycles were registered in the UK as of March 2021, according to Government statistics, I’m not going to be holding my breath. Andy

  11. I don’t think there are anywhere near 1.36 owners of motorcycles . Just taking into account my motorcycle friends there are 21 registered to 5 people, so a figure of 100k may not be too bad although I must admit to not belonging to any organisation.

  12. Taken root more like. Andy

  13. I'm going to guess a lot of those 1.36million bikes are 125cc or below, as owners and riders of larger machines (I know I'm generalising a bit here but there aren't many Ducatis below600cc these days) we will have a different focus.
The fact that MAG are involved I find slightly depressing, my only experience of them is of smaller bike shows where they invariably have a Gazebo with a custom harley or something similar with skulls all over it, and a couple of fat knackers in leather waistcoats with ratty grey ponytails trying to persuade everyone it's a family oriented organisation and if we want to join up to go and see Goatkiller Pete who's membership secretary.
That said, I'm not a member of any organisation beyond this forum and so can't make my wishes known beyond lobbying my own MP. What we need is to get some motorcyclists elected to the House of Commons where they can have an influence.
