Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Blackadder, Apr 5, 2021.

  1. Apologies if this one has come up in discussion previously. Can’t help but notice sports bike shop have got decent offers on at the moment.....but which one to choose! Tom Tom or Garmin??

the TT rider 550:world looks a decent bit of kit with all fitting kit included.....thoughts ?

  2. Garmin Zumo XT.

  3. Garmin Zumo but be prepared to get your head around using Basecamp

  4. Garmin XT and base camp no longer needed as other much easier to use apps such as MRA( my route app) make life a lot easier and long journey or holidays route planning so much quicker too.

  5. Tom Tom every time.

  6. You'll always get conflicting answers on this question, just like what oil or which tyres...

But, in this case, you definately want a Garmin XT :D

  7. Ihad a base Garmin. Then a Tomtom rider. I sold that asap and bought another base version Garmin. You work it out.

  8. I use a Tomtom. Be aware that you need a USB lead marked 'high speed' or the screen will not run at max brightness and on a sunny day that is a problem.

  9. I use the tomtom app on my old iphone xr with quadloc with the wireless mount on top of the anti vibration set up.. Got the senna comms in my Shoei helmet. I've had the BMW badged satnav when i had an XR1000. Couldn't get used to that (but prob due to me using tomtom for so long)

  10. I've always had Garmins and think they work great. Been looking at the Zumo XT as my last 550 has given up the ghost.
Currently if you have Bennett's insurance can get it for £343.99 via their rewards scheme with full European maps.

  11. To be honest I often use waze if going urban point to point, but for planning holiday routes, different day different routes etc then something like My route app is needed.

  12. Garmin x 3 here got a snooper db8500 for HGV work but towards end of year I will be moving to latest garmin dezl 7" version.

  13. Wow, that appears pretty clear ! Thanks to all for taking the time to respond, appreciate the replies. I have used both in the car over the years and had a garmin etrex for tackling mountains! I was leaning towards Tom Tom but now garmin. Cheers for the advice.

  14. Bit late to the party but a big thumbs up for garmin XT and plan your routes using the MRA app either on a pad or phone then transfer it over using Bluetooth i do not need to use basecamp

  15. Agree with others re. MyRouteApp. At long last a viable, more intuitive and better way to plan routes for Garmin, TomTom and other PNUs. Basecamp worked but was quite quirky, non intuitive and frustrating for new users. Lacked in many features but had one or two useful ones.

With MRA HERE routing isn't included in the free version, this is the same as Garmin routing. There's also TomTom routing. Paying the sub gives a host of other useful features including Google Maps and Street View. The latter I use a lot to assess roads, check out fuel and lunch stops etc. Michelin mapping too with those green edged roads. There is now, at long last, the ability to add intermediate way-points into a route, add delays at these (useful for working out an appropriate ETA at the destination) and define start date and time.

The downside being that the better functionality is with the paid subscription version. Not too expensive but an annual sub all the same. You do occasionally get special offers, more so as an existing subscriber. I picked up lifetime full membership for €99 at the start of lock-down #1.

  17. Had to throw my Garmin 590 and 595 away after the battery connector pins broke on both devices. Never tried the XT, now use the TomTom Rider 550. Seems to do what I need for less money.

  18. The screen is much better on my 550 compared to my mates Garmins.

  19. When I sold my 595 the guy returned it as he said it wasn't holding battery charge. I managed to fix it fairly easily with the help of this useful guide:

  20. I have a Garmin 595, bought this year and used once, hoping that my trip to Spain happens so I can try it out properly.
