First Ride On My Sfv4s Made Me Sad...

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Fletch., Apr 5, 2021.

  1. Hey you guys...

What a weekend... my bike was delivered a few weeks ago, a 2020 Streetfighter V4S. I’m so bust at work I hadn’t had a chance to ride it until this weekend. Got all geared up and went excitedly to the garage, uncovered her stuck the key in dead :astonished: it seems two and a bit weeks on a Ducati with a tracker fitted is enough to drain it. Long story short, went and bought a charger from Ducati. Charged he up over night, went to her the next day keys in light up, error msg city :astonished:. Long story short turned it on and off a few times and the errors went away, all except the quick shifter msg. I can live with no quickshifter until aDucati opens again on Tuesday. Went out for a ride, engine management light stays on :astonished: straight back home... long story short to angry to mess about with it, back in the garage it went. Brother came round, first time since lockdown started back in March last year, wanted to see the machine went to it, no warning msgs :astonished:. Went out for a ride bike cuts out at 9-10k revs, like violently, first time it happened it was like the front brakes had been jammed on! :astonished: Long story short straight back home, in the garage, might have kicked it a bit, really sad no idea what’s wrong with it...

Any ideas? I’m going to call Ducati tomorrow but would like some idea of what it might be? Is it a thing? Have I set it up wrong when I was playing in the menus? Is it something to do with the battery draining?
Sorry for the tale of woe, this is my first Ducati so. It really sure what to expect from them...

    Thanks guys...

  2. Probably something to do with the battery draining.........but give Mike in the service department a call tomorrow and I’m sure that he will sort you out :upyeah:

  3. You’d be surprised (well, you’ve found out now) how quickly a tracker can drain the battery. Once the battery falls below a certain voltage, whilst not completely dead, it won’t energise the circuits or be able to turn over the engine. An optimising charger is a good investment.

As for the engine cut out at 9-10k, this is a wild guess but perhaps it’s controlled by the ECU to limit over revving during the running in process .

  4. Hiya

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the optimising charger will pay for itself in no time :). That's an interesting thought however my bike he done 4k miles already :grinning:.

I'll call Mike at Ducati and see what he says.

    Thanks :upyeah:

  5. IMOA you should always have the battery on a trickle charger and especially if you have a tracker or alarm fitted. Either will drain the battery so quick. Also remember that a trickle charger may not fully recharge your battery over night. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but just look at it as one of lifes lessons!!

Get it into Ducati and i'm sure your problems will be solved very quickly and you'll soon be enjoying the SF.

  6. The tracker has a low battery alert feature, worth raising this up from the default 11.8v to 12.1 or something if you have a lithium battery in there. Also, if it has a lithium battery it could be knackered if it’s discharged too much.

for balance I have a tracker on my V2 and I can leave it 3-4 weeks with no issues at all, the V4 surely takes some turning over but worth pushing for a new battery as I have my suspicion the bike was PDI’d early (you can check the date in your manual) and then left for a few weeks, then your few weeks and the result is a month on a draining battery

  9. It had enough power to make the back light flash on and of on its own and to make the bike click really fast and really loud :no_mouth: but yeah pretty much dead...

  10. I hope not lol

  11. Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies :D

I've spoken with Mike and am dropping it of tomorrow (weather permitting, its snowing here at the minute). I'm sure its nothing more than a dodgy battery. I'll keep you all updated.

  13. With the battery dying, it could have given the ECU a hiccup. Shouldn’t be a biggie for a dealer with Ducati mainframe computer access.
Modern electronics on bikes these days don’t like voltage fluctuation.

  14. I second this, I was told that because even the dash is considered an ECU if you have a situation where they get out of sync it can cause issues. Which might explain why you went back and it had sorted itself only to then have more different issues on the ride. Completely removing the battery for at least 20 mins and connecting a strong new battery would be the only thing I think you could do at home without a dealer, but if the faults are then stored as ‘hard errors’ they will reoccur.

I was told that on Euro 5 bikes it stores loads of errors as soft errors before you see them on the dash, I was also told that Euro 5 in a computer sensory and telemetry perspective was a massive step forwards over Euro4, which doesn’t surprise me, so I’m sure the dealer will see the issue

  15. Hey you guys...

Update. I went to see Mike and long story short, he fixed it, it was pretty much what you all said, the drain caused the software to glitch, hard and soft errors all over the place and it actually needed an Injection Software Update (maybe yours do too?).

Rides like, well like wow really! My first ride on a working bike was amazing!

Thanks for all your words and for taking the time to belay my worry and thanks Mike if you (or others) are reading this...

On the upside I learnt something and also got to ride a new 1100 scrambler whilst they fixed plugged mine in
