Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by slumdog, Apr 8, 2021.

  1. Hi all ,
Spag clutch has gone - seems there is a difference between the starter toothed wheel on the R a the standard bike.. Is this the case ? ebay selling the R version and not the standard ,,
Also anyone know if this is interchangeable with other parts on other bike s?
I need the standard one ...

    Cheers

  2. You also need to replace the flange and the gearwheel. Not just the sprag. I purchased all 3 from Snells for £365 inc VAT 3-4yrs ago. I'd be wary of fleabay unless it was a verified seller.

  3. +1 for @bootsam ’s comments. No point in just doing the sprag without all the other parts too as it will likely fail again.

  4. Also worthwhile upgrading the starter leads as well.

  5. Difference between the R and standard seems only the be the cut outs to make the R one lighter - same number of teeth ^^^ Too difficult to check this out I presume..

  6. Added pic of the spag that came apart on removal- has done very well over the years ! Ordered a new one , seems that the S and R used a different on , cant imagine why.. New started wheel and spag as they do the work - the other part am leaving as I think that is only a retaining piece and free runs only .. What do we think on that ?
Thanks for help so far :)

  7. What’s “the other part” that you aren’t replacing? Is it the flange that bolts to the flywheel?
If so, the inner diameter of that is critical to making the sprag “sprag” correctly and drive the crank.
    It can wear too.

  8. As others have said Richard, and looking at the state of remains of your one-way-clutch, it really is best to replace with a "kit" of the 3 parts involved as although the two faces that the clutch bears on may look ok, they have almost always, very slightly worn or changed in temper enough to affect the "creating of friction" bit during churning. It may work fine for hundreds or even thousands of miles, but considering the tear-down time, most conclude that it isn't worth the risk as it's life could still be far shorter than if all 3 replaced. It's incredible that the system works fairly consistently at all, all things considered and particularly when you add oil.
