Engine Noise And Management Light

Discussion in 'Supersport (2016 onwards)' started by Steve Paxman, Mar 22, 2021.

  1. Afternoon, please assuage my nervous disposition. I have only had the bike a few weeks and done 100 miles or so. I bought it a couple hundred miles away not from a Ducati dealer. It has 18k miles on it and the shop I bought it from say they did the Desmo service prior to delivering it.

Issue one I hear a metallic type clanking over the other normal rattles, any idea's or is it normal. Video to demonstrate although its louder in real life.

Issue two: The engine management light came on today, but I also notice the service indicator flash up and then go out. Are the two linked does the engine management light stay on to remind me a service is due ? Bike seems to run ok !
I did have the battery off yesterday whilst cleaning and fettling.
Do I have to get Ducati to clear the light or is there a way to do it ?
    Thanks

  2. Sounds fine to me.

  3. That's nice to hear, without another to reference it to I am nervous of the noises it makes. I had a 900ss ie many years ago and that made all sorts of rackets, but that was a dry clutch. I thought a lot of the noise would go away with the modern engines.

  4. The engine sounds normal on your video but there shouldn't be an engine management light.
If it is due a service the service indicator will come up at switch on and say "Desmo", "Oil" or "Date" depending on the service due and after 5 seconds will go out leaving a small "service" indication. Only a Ducati dealer can clear it and it is unlikely they will unless they also do the service as their computer links to Ducati's online service record.

  5. I have it booked into Laguna at Ashford 2nd April, they are happy to turn off the light as I have an invoice to say its been serviced. But it will only be cleared and not recorded on the Ducati system.
The management light could be linked to the fact I found one of those bypass units you put on when you de cat the bike. It was fitted even though the bike has a cat on it. I plugged in the original socket and removed it. Not ridden it since then. Perhaps there was a fault within the exhaust system sensors and that was a cheap way of getting round it. I will plug it back in and see if that changes things.
They will also look over the bike and let me know if it does have any issues.

Ducati should give a noise induction briefing to those of us that are used to inline Four's :D

  6. The device was probably an exhaust valve servo eliminator. You've plugged the servo back in but it could be faulty or the valve jammed. I'd put the eliminator back as the valves invariably cause problems.
Good that Laguna will turn off the service light

  7. I have the exhaust valve eliminator on mine with the full Termi system. Never seen a fault light yet.

  8. Also worth noting... if you disconnect something and you get the engine management light on then re connect it, it won’t always clear but a quick ride out, a few key on / key offs can sometimes clear it.

  9. My engine light came on yesterday just before going out for a spin. I went out anyway and the bike was fine, no loss of power.
Today looking over the bike I saw the exhaust valve servo only moved about 1mm.
I had this issue when I first had the bike so stripped the fairings and tried to get the cover off the exhaust valve, 2 of the 3 screws seized, managed to get one seized screw out but the other is fixed fast, not even my trusty chisel will undo it, that job will have to wait

I managed to prise the cover to one side, I could then see the cable was gunked up so gave it a clean and lubed up with WD40. Operated it a few times, started the bike a few times then the engine light went off.

Need to get this screw out then I’ll fit stainless with some grease on the threads

  10. I did reconnect the exhaust valve servo eliminator and after 30 miles the light did go out.
Had the bike looked at by Laguna in Ashford last Friday. They cleared the fault codes which were low voltage and exhaust valve servo related. They said the bike was fine and that the replacement sensor is a common fix when the valves get stuck rather than replace the Cat. Ducati ok it. They did not charge me for their time, which I thought was great. Happy the engine is fine I shall now spend all my time listening for other noises :p

  11. I have a Triumph Stag so listening to imminent failure noises is a way of life for me.
