Why, Shoei, Why??

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Brouny851, Apr 9, 2021.

  1. Anyone who has ever bought one ( and I'm brand loyal) knows that they come with COPIOUS amounts of documentation which the vast majority of us promptly discard. Perhaps other makes do too I haven't bought anything else for a long time.

They also come with a tiny bottle of silicone oil which I've had numerous theories as to its purpose. I'll just repeat that for clarity, YES I HAVE VARIOUS THEORIES AS TO ITS PURPOSE!!

Today, when the new lid arrived, and having no life I decided to find out what the official purpose was.

After poring over (yep that's the right spelling, just checked it - told you, no life) the multilingual 86 page "How to use your Helmet properly" and the also multilingual AND encyclopedic 247 page "Instructions for Use" I am none the f**king wiser. They tell you how to click buttons together on the padding but not a word about the silicone oil!!

What is the 3ml of it OFFICIALLY for and why do they torture me so??

  2. Isn’t it for the visor seal. You should lube it every so often.

  3. Always thought it was lubricant if the helmet was a bit tight?:)

  4. I also found it great for car door seals when living in Sweden's frozen winters. A small wiping on the seals stopped my doors freezing shut and took the fear out of opening coupe doors with frameless windows.

  5. There's nothing about any of the above in 350 pages of print!!!

  6. It’s for wiping around the rubber visor seal to keep it supple, (think Arai supplied the same?) a dash behind your ears can help getting it on and off too ;)

  7. Yup, it’s for smearing on the visor seal, stops the rubber cracking, I also use a bit on the visor release mechanism just to keep it running smoothly.

One tip I picked up on t’internet,...and it’s blindingly obvious when you think about it, is when you put your helmet away, don’t click the visor shut because the seal will compression set and not be very “sealy “ after a while,...just close the visor without actually clipping it shut and it will last and perform better :upyeah:

  8. Whenever you're going riding, put a little on your helmet just to be sure everything is smooth...

  10. I am pleased you have found enlightenment Brouny.
I learnt about using silicone oil to service your helmet by talking to a wise man, (the English speaking, Arai service technician) at the Bol D'or at Paul Ricard Circuit around 1990, so the Shoei bottle has never been a mystery to me.
I currently have a Shark helmet, my first, and probably last, non-Shoei in over 25 years. The internal sun visor is great, but the quality is definitely inferior, and no bottle of Silicone oil!

  11. I will never use Shark again. Mine was falling apart after one season the liner was loose in the shell. Paint and deacls chipped easy. Seat belt type chin fastener was not secure on one occasion, never happens with double d fasten. Shark pinlock popped out and would not seal again against the visor. Leaving me with a fogged up visor going over St Bernard pass in snow. Never again.

  12. Yes I do love them. Just received an X-Spirit III or X-14 as the yanks call it, I don't know by what name it goes it goes in the UK but it's the Aerodyne TC4 after a couple of NXR's.

  13. I bought one this week to, a GT Air 2. Time will tell if that "snake oil" will do it.

  14. I believe it's for the rubber seal and the lid mechanism. Over time, the rubber seal can go dry or the lid mechanism can cause friction when openning/ closing lid. I got a can of silicone spray so I can maintain my helmet after cleaning it.
