Clutch is ready for a refresh as is starting to slip a bit on take off Never pulled a clutch apart so few questions Only special tool I will need is a clutch holding tool I assume? Have long bars etc What clutch parts will fit the 748? I am assuming I will just need friction plates? Are they interchangeable with the 1198 friction plates? I have a few spare Where is the best place to get decent friction plates ? Thanks
You won't need a holding tool to just remove the plates, only if you are changing the drum. I wouldn't bother with steels first of all, just start with the frictions. Same plates as 1198..But check as your old ones may be steel and the 1198;s ali.
Cheers Nelson - how do I know which are steel and which are ali? Also does this mean that any clutch pack for 748 /1198 etc will fit eg barnett etc? Also am I right in thinking that there is a problem re mixing the wrong material plates with the wrong material drum ? Am pretty sure my drum on my 1198 is lighter - maybe titanium not sure - and maybe thats why the spare plates were in the parts I got - in that I guess ali with a light drum , steel with an ordinary one - is this right?
Use a magnet. I use two of these; MAGNETIC PICK UP TOOL. 60cm EXTENDING TELESCOPIC MAGNET | eBay to pull the steel plates off the hub, will also work on the frictions, if steel, if ali you'll have to hook out with two long thin screwdrivers. As for plates, these appear to be a popular choice, although I've never used myself and don't know how the prices compare to OEM. Ducati 996 998 SPS SP R clutchplates clutch plates NEW | eBay
You have choices here. If your 748 drum/basket is steel, (have you checked its condition?) I'd be changing that to ali and adding new ali frictions. The new ali plates bashing/clattering against yr old steel drum will have a short life. Ali on ali will also be a bit less "Ducati" aka awful bloody clatter... Can you still buy steel plates?
As above, especially if the drum is worn, ali plates will then get a really hard life and notch up really quickly. The clutch will then clatter quite a bit. Make sure you get the stack height right, it can make quite a difference.
I use the plates as per that ebay link (motorize-gmbh) and they work really well, and would use them again.
