1299 Wheel Weights

  1. Anyone know, or have reliable link, for base vs s vs r wheel weights? thx

  2. It would be interesting to know that. All I can tell you is on my 1199 Panigale S the forged Marchesini’s are really light. When the rim is separated from the tyre it’s unbelievably light. As you know carbon wheels are even lighter but apparently not by much.

    I weighed the rear wheel of my Multistrada a week ago with a Metzeler M9rr tyre on it. The scales were really old so I can’t guarantee the accuracy but the combined weight of wheel and tyre was 28lbs or
    12.5 kg. Just holding it felt heavy whereas the forged Marchesini didn’t. Wish I’d weighed the wheel on its own without the tyre.

    Also I’d been considering buying some Marchesini’s to fit the Multistrada. A set from an 1198 apparently weigh ;

    The back wheel:3.8kg
    The front wheel: 3.4kg

    I wish I knew what the tyre on its own weighed.

  3. Thing is a set of Oz wheels are as cheap new as people ask for used pani ones looking at eBay (well, almost!)


    (And if you can get vat etc sorted from buying from Italy)
     
  4. S and R wheels are the same item, with rim tape applied at factory being the only difference. Afraid I dont have any info on the base rims but for S/R

    The Oz Gass have little to no weight advantage, but are very pretty.

    BSTs come in a fair bit lighter, if you like carbon.

    With the Oz wheels, you save around 50g when comparing the ducati front wheel spacers with the Oz supplied items.

  6. Interesting stuff Glen. It’s not massive differences between the Marchesini forged, the OZ’s and the BST’s, although we can see they are lighter.

    For me, the big difference is from standard Multistrada wheels and any of the one sets you showed. Thanks. Any idea what the tyres weigh?

  7. Sorry, no tyre weights to hand, though I'm sure that someone did a carcass weigh a few years back. (might have been one of the tyre shops ?)

    As I mentioned in another recent thread, the wheel weights, while a reasonable guide, are not the end of the story. I saw an article maybe 5-7 yrs back from a German magazine which did inertia tests on the wheels in a lab. Several physically lighter wheels were shown to have worse inertia due to
    the majority of the weight being distributed towards the outer rim. They therefore gave less handling/accel/decel advantage than heavier wheels with superior weight distribution.

  9. The 1199 rear BST carbon on my Pani weighs 2.85 kg with only bearings in. (for sale soon) as getting TKCC rear,
     
  10. I’d love carbon. But just can’t get over seeing one so easily destroyed at Donington:(

    Cheers Glenn. Sounds like a good use set of S or R wheels are worth the spend if a good price. There are some on eBay around a grand (which I still think is pricey for used!) but it’s half the price of the Oz nice gold ones....but I really like the home on the pani...
     
  11. Skimming the German info, looks like Michelin pilot power are the way to go. Fronts are similar all round but they are by far the lightest rear.
     
  12. Yeah, the S/Rs will move a little cheaper. I've sold both in the last 6m and asked the same price for a tidy pair plus extra rear with several marks, as
    I did for the Oz gass pair with discs.

    See how much this respray on the car costs me as to how much budget I have...
     
  14. Skimming eBay, look s like all Panigale wheels fit (not 899/959 rear obvs) bit even new V4 is same

  15. Stock 1299 wheels are about 5.45kg for the rear and 4.1kg for the front without spacers.

  16. So actually a fair difference: 3.7 and 3.6 respectively for S wheels. What’s that 30% rear, 10% front?

  18. Front on the S is 3.134 according to Glen’s pics so it’s pretty much 1kg lighter. The rear almost 2kg lighter.

    Not the same dramatic difference on the 959 rear as the stock wheel on those seems to be filled with lead but you would definitely feel the difference.

    I’m with you on the forged alloy over carbon - I just can’t get past the way the carbon fails so dramatically when it goes and have doubts over longevity of any resin based product over time and exposure to the sun.

    Depending on what happens with @Dave dunlop’s bike sale you could get his OZ Gass wheels!

  19. 1199&1299/ V4 wheels are the same. I've used the same set of OZ's between the 2 bikes. Just need to make sure that you use the correct front spacers between the OZ's and Ducati Forged Marchesini Wheels, if you swap between them. I may have a black set of OZ Gass Wheels FS if you're interested?
