Gear Rod Head Scratcher

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Noste500, Apr 10, 2021.

  1. So I’ve undone my lock nut on gear link rod to adjust height of gear shift pedal.
When I turn the middle section it moves away from the bottom and towards the top ie : shift pedal stays where it is wtf ‍♂️
Usually when you spin the center section it has opposite threads so it moves both ends away or both ends towards each other when spun . Do I really have to dismantle rod assembly to adjust gear shift height or am I having a moment .....

If pic comes up , It’s the white part I’m spinning to adjust and yellow parts are moving to one end or other but not away or apart . Hope that makes sense

  2. And if I’m correct , then it’s either footrest hanger off and lower joint off and adjust or take too joint of rod off and spin round ( this is the section with the black plastic switch cover on it with a black wire entering it ... which bags the question , what happens if I pop the cover off ( 3 Allen bolts ) ? would I be advised not to touch that ?

  3. I'd hazard a guess that you have a gear rod with the same thread on either end, rather than right-hand one end and left-hand the other. This isn't, I think, the usual arrangement but it's what I have on my 851 SP3. It's a bit of a pain if you need to make frequent adjustments (rare?), but the easy fix is to undo one of the rose joints and adjust that way. Otherwise buy anther gear rod and make sure it has opposite threads, then you'll need the missing rose joint.

  4. This is exactly what I have . pain to get to a rose joint though .. footrest hanger etc need to come off , as cannot get to bolt on rose .

  5. Yep, you need to undo the gear lever bolt then loosen the lower rear set bolt and remove the upper bolt, or the other way round. You can then spin the lever and remove the rose joint and adjust. It’s a pita...

  6. What a silly set up . Never had that on any other bike .

  7. Once you dump the sketchy oem quickshifter for something more reliable, then you can fit a normally adjustable shift rod section.

  8. This appears to be a Ducati thing as my 959 is exactly the same even though the manual suggest it should be adjusted in the manner you’ve tried. Instead of a 30 sec job it’s a pita 15 mins!
