Cornering Abs

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by PerryL, Apr 17, 2021.

  1. It's not me going into corners too hot. manage fine - well, apart from being knocked off! I was just interested in whether cornering ABS was worth it.

  2. If you don’t go in too hot, you don’t know how fast you can go in ;)

  3. Perry, there's plenty of information available on the web, other than this forum or YouTube, on the benefits of cornering ABS (and traction control).
Whether you like it or not, all manufacturers are heading in the same direction on safety mechanisms such as ABS, cornering TC and ABS so you may as well accept that new bikes are likely to have it. In the future, if you don't want these safety devices you will have to buy an older bike that doesn't have them, or a new one that allows you to disable them - but be aware that this might affect your insurance cover if an accident can be attributed to your having disabled safety devices.

  4. On the road, I brake before corner and roll in. So cornering abs is not much use. BUT, every now and then shit happens and you have to. It doesn't sit the bike up. It works. So I personally like it.

  5. I am not trying to close my mind to it - just interested. Anyway, as I said the Ducati Monster comes with everything as standard and the Aprilia has it available, if you pay for it. My main thought was if I go Aprilia, is it worth paying for.

  6. I take it that it is an IAM technique that I need to learn? As I will probably do my IAM test again, I'll need to mug up on all of the latest techniques:innocent:

  7. You said:
Is the current advice different? As in, go into the the corner as fast as you like and if you've overdone it, make use of your cornering ABS?

So if you're not going into corners too hot, why are you worrying about needing to use cornering ABS if, AS YOU SAID, you've overdone it, i.e. too hot?

  8. No, the IAM technique is to learn limit points and use them, like I said.

  9. Just interested. If I go for the Aprilia then cornering ABS is an extra that cost. Wandering it it's worth it.

  10. I was being facetious!

I guess that Severn Advanced Motorcyclist is my local group?

  11. Not sure if it's any nearer to Berkeley than the Bristol one. SAM meets on the north side of Gloucester (at B.E.W.S.C., Hammond Way - I don't know about the Bristol one).

  12. Entirely the opposite;)

  13. That IS a disappointment!

  14. Come have a ride with me mate. You’ll soon learn ;)

  15. As much as I hate abs on track.

it has saved me a few times on the road

  16. Well, if I get the Aprilia then I'll buy it as an extra, and if I get the Monster then it comes with. Either way, I'll have it.

  17. Fundamentally; it'll help to a certain extent, if you get it wrong, or something outside your control happens, in a corner. If you're confident that's not going to happen  and you're buying the Aprilia then save your cash...

On the other hand, it could prove to be a sensible choice.

  18. Exactly.

You may never ever use it but I guess you justify the cost by the knowledge that it is there if you need it.

  19. Ducati and aprillia’s systems are pretty good tbh.

the Japanese abs systems generally.. especially on track make me want to cry. My Suzuki has a full blown wobbly

  20. Can you turn it off? I think that you can with the Ducati.
