748 748 New Battery £45 Bargain

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Ducatijones748, Apr 18, 2021.

  1. I was searching online for a new battery for my 2000 748, just by chance came across Halfords, yes bloody Halfords for a Yuasa YB16AL-A2 battery and only £45.00.
    Picking it up tomorrow.
The bike is a non runner, the fuel pump is not priming when ignition is switched on.
I am hoping for some advice about it later on.
    Cheers.

  3. Lol.... how much is it to subscribe on here ? It is the least I can do, I am going to be a right pain in the arse on here soon looking for info when I start work on getting it to run.
    Help needed soon.

  4. You could cheekily ask tomorrow if you could price battery retrospectively? - I think it's £15 to get the Halfords card, so I see your dilemma :) but if you are a regular shopper at Halfords then it pays for itself in no time. :upyeah:

  5. Very good price on the battery, I paid £65 just recently for the same thing, and that was the best price I could find at the time. With regard to the fuel pump, if the bike stays standing for any length of time with fuel in the tank then it tends to gum up the fuel pump. This happened to me on two 748's and seems to be a common problem.

The only way around it, I have found, is to remove the pump and run some carb cleaner through it, this worked for me but if it is really gummed up then a new pump may be the only answer, or you could try ultrasonic cleaning. You can buy the pump as a Bosch part, which is a lot cheaper than Ducati charge, which is about £170.

It's highly likely when you remove the pump that a new large O ring for the pump baseplate may be required due to stretch

  6. That's cracking deal they must have a sale on at the minute?, the only thing i don't understand is why such a small battery is so damn expensive in the first place.

  7. I hope it is as easy as that

  8. £37.80 with the trade card. So still a bargain.

  9. The Halfords card subscription option isn't available presently because of their back office staff being furloughed because of CV19 and they couldn't cope with the additional admin.

We've written to them asking if and when it can be re-introduced.

  10. I was after a new battery recently and looked in Halfords. They no longer allow the acid to be sold bottled with a dry battery, it seems, so pre-filled them. The ones in the shop had a fill date going back 12 months. Gave them a wide berth and ordered a Motobatt online.

  11. I never thought anyone still used those old wet lead acid batteries on bikes. They never had the cranking amps that a much safer modern Gel/AGM battery has.

  12. Quite a few eBay sellers are still selling batteries with acid packs to fill the battery. My recent battery from an eBay supplier came with the acid pack in the same OEM box, which was a Yuasa battery straight from the manufacturer.

  13. Just picked up my two batteries via click and collect. Both batteries had been filled in april\may 2019!!! I put them on a slow charger and the first registered 6.4 volts!! and would not charge with a slow charger.

I guess you get what you pay for, but I will boost these batteries and see if they will hit 12 volts plus on the charger, if not then they go back, as, although they were filled with acid, no regime for the charge has been followed.

They seem to be duds passed off as good batteries, and even if they were, the life of these is going to be short. Probably best to avoid.

  15. This is tedious. I will prepare myself for a discussion when I visit Halfords for my click-and-collect. IN case an argument is needed, there are plenty of clear statements from Yuasa, here:

    https://www.yuasa.co.uk/info/technical/need-know-batteries/

    e.g.

"Only commission a dry-charged battery when it is needed for a customer."

"The maximum storage time of dry-charged batteries before they are commissioned by filling with acid is 24 months."

  16. I purchased two:- 11.46/0.00 volts.. with hindsight, after help from posts on here, i would have taken a voltmeter with me - do you have one?

  17. Nooooooo I have been robbed

  18. I am taking it back tomorrow.

  19. I need to check mine first for charge, and its ability to hold that charge once up to the proper level. It looks as though Halfords just filled the batteries to avoid selling them without the acid pack. The levels on my batteries are all below what they should be, even on minimum. They have either been filed badly or they have been overcharged and possibly the acid has boiled away.

Potentially these look like a bad buy and I can see a lot of these that are under par being returned as useless.
