V4 Broken Exhaust

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Dukepaul, Dec 12, 2018.

  1. jj996 is right, there is a recall just announced to replace headers on both banks of cylinders. With all the recalls, and warranty work being done I wonder if Ducati are actually making any money out of the V4?
Suspect dealers are fed up with workshops fully booked with work at recall and warranty labour rates rather than retail rates!

  2. rang the dealer today and it is booked in for early March to have the exhaust replaced, plus the oil cooler, hydraulic tensioners and now the headers, oh and there were a couple of other small updates to do, they are also going to do it's annual service while it is there, I was told that it will be a day and a half in the workshop.....

  3. appreciate this is an old thread but just wondering if you got sorted with the replacement can / system?

my 2018 has 2 cracks on it and it’s blown a small chunk out of the outer shield. Not sure if I need to speak to Ducati or just get it welded and wait for it to explode again.

  4. cadwell is 105DB. I blew 105DB at snetterton with akra exhaust and pipewerx baffles (V4S) and was let on even though snetterton is 102 static

  5. Definitely speak to Ducati in the first instance. There is no way this should happen, its either a design or manufacturing defect.
Your could be out of warranty now (depending when you bought it and if you extended or not) but they should still cover this on good will. Worst case you have to pay for the labour but I would push for it all.
    Good luck !

  6. Can’t just re weld that mate. It has cracked around the welds as it was welded quickly with too much heat. You could get it patched over. Give us a shout if you need it sorting.

  7. Wondering if that's Inconel, or something cheaper?

  8. I think the 1299 cans are made of 20 gauge. Seen somewhere they were s/s but they look more like hot rolled steel.

  9. I did my time as a fabricator welder. Worked at some automotive shops, where they let unskilled operators use/play with the welding kit...

  10. Inconel?! It’s a shitty mild steel exhaust mate, inconel is a specialist and very expensive material that wouldn’t be used for a standard exhaust.

  11. I'd have thought a £20k+ bike would have justified something better than mild steel shite.

  12. It’s just cost cutting normal business practice using substandard material/design on bits you don’t see or they think will be swapped/upgraded.
    Very poor show.

  13. spoke to Ducati Leeds, not interested at all. Never are you be honest. Never seen or heard of a V4 exhaust failing apparently (despite the information all over the internet) sadly the bike is 2 months out of warranty. @nelly has offered to have a look into it for me but due to the Thursday deadline I’ve opted to try and repair it and find another stock cat somewhere that no one wants.

I have a good mate whose very handy with his welding kit (he uses it to make some incredible GeeTech paddock stands when he’s not repairing things for me :joy:) so left it with him to work his magic on.

fingers crossed should be sorted for Thursday at Donny.

considered getting a slip on which wouldn’t be too much hassle to swap back to the stock can as it’s a straight forward swap in the garage. But nothing out there for a decent price at the minute.

  14. Inconel doesn’t rust....!

It’s no surprise, the paint on the tank is thinner than a thin thing, cost savings and poor parts all over it. Mild steel shit exhaust is fit for purpose for the warranty period.

Glad I extended mine a further 2 years.

  15. I think it’s probably the best decision! First thing I was going to do was a full Akro but I’ve held off and kept it stock as I don’t want the Ballache of not being able to get on uk days! A slip on is a good compromise!

  16. Isnt inconel an Uber expensive and rare material in exhausts? Not factory fit

  17. @DRR117 sorry to hear Leeds arent interested. Dealer network is so inconsistent. I think that is shite service.
I appreciate what your saying about time constraints, and its great to hear Nelly is on the case :upyeah::)

I would definitely make a nuisance of myself, firing emails to both Ducati UK and head office with pictures, telling them its on the forum and will be going to the motorcycle press next week as a reflection of the sort of after sales you can expect on a relatively low miles bike.

I've seen them fail on 1260 multistradas too, so its not just these ones.
On a trip 2 years back my 2013 Multi blew the lambda sensor out of the front down pipe :dizzy:
Stress crack right around the weld...
Not ideal when your in the middle of nowhere in the scottish highlands :yum

  18. Inconel? Is it nice in there? :)

  19. Sort of. It’s a bit like stainless but lighter. Nice stuff... :upyeah:

A lot of after market exhaust companies use it for the higher end stuff, Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari etc. Not noticed it on bikes, dunno why...

It’s not cheap but it’s not ridiculously expensive.

  20. I am still amazed at the sh*te welding standards on the OEM exhaust system of the V4. The 1199/1299 were not much better. Most of these look like stress fractures close if not next to the weld line. Seems as if mounting positions and/or bracket locations might contribute to failures, when subjected temperature cycling, movement and vibration.
