Chain And Sprocket Questions

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Duncs, May 15, 2021.

  1. I just bought a Renthal Quick release set up for my MTS 1200 and apparently Renthal are having problems with supply, so I had to go down one tooth on the rear. I understand this will slow acceleration and the speedo reading will be out. I don't know if it will read slower or faster than I'm going, can anyone put me right. Also I got a DID Pro Street 530VX3 chain which has a note on the box saying Disp.400cc-1100cc then note Engine displacement shown for reference only. Is this chain any good for a 1200 and have I bought DID's cheapest chain. I'm doing a rider training day at Cadwell and a track day at Brands later next month, so I'm hoping this chain will be ok and the sprocket won't slow me down too much. Does anyone have an old 42 tooth renthal sprocket they could lend, sell or give away? 20210515_075745.jpg 20210515_075800.jpg

  2. I’m confused as to why the speedo reading will change . Surely it’s a magnetic pick up off the rear brake disk and is therefore linked to revolutions of the wheel with the OE size tyre fitted. Changing sprocket size has no effect upon that.

As for the chain, correct size is 530 x 108 links afaik so it’ll be fine:upyeah:

  3. West Cork Paul should have allayed all your fears. You will accelerate marginally slower but only when comparing your maximum acceleration, with your maximum possible now. So unless you typically accelerate at full throttle you won't notice much if any difference.

What we all want to know -is the chain gold or not?

  4. If you go on the DID site, they have a break down of their models. I just bought their ZVMX chain for my V2. Think the CC ratings are to provide a guide of wear.

I'd be interested how you get on with the quick change set up as the one for my bike fits a little closer to the hub than OEM meaning the sprocket was touching the swingarm where it rounds and of course made the chain out of alignment. I think I've just been sent a wrong carrier, but I'm curious.

  5. Dropping 1 tooth on the rear sprocket is likely to affect your gear choice at 30mph as your revs will be marginally lower than what you are used to. If you are a third gear rider, you might find the bike prefers second gear. Andy

  6. Chain is gold.Wooo
I have 9 points on license so I was worried about my speed on the road, which I wont have to worry about now I know where the speed is measured.
I put a Jt quick change on my 748 and because of the 520 chain the bolts holding the sprocket stick out too much looking naff. I'll have to check that the chain is lined up now because I have not ridden it. Would putting washers behind the sprocket solve this problem?

  7. You can always get a gps bicycle speedo that clips on around your handle bars for £30. They are held on with rubber bands and don't damage anything. I have one on my 80's dirtbike 'cause the speedo is far from accurate and it bothers me in 30 speed zones/ cameras.

    PS.
    Gold is an excellent choice.

  8. Need to be big washers :joy:. Just been in garage fitting oem back. Took pics.

  9. Looking at the specifications a VX3 chain will be sufficient but the ZVM-X is probably the better choice and doesn't seem to cost that much more.

It probably won't last as long as you'd like but how long is a complete unknown.

  10. I've actually got it the wrong way round, so I am going one tooth up from 40 to 41 teeth. Oops. As Andy said I'll want to be in a lower gear with one tooth down, now the opposite is true. This will suit me better as I found the Multi needed to be in a lower gear than other bikes I was more used to. I've fitted the chain now and it seems to run straight with no rubbing on the swingarm. I'll put a laser line on it tomorrow and test ride it. 20210515_165909.jpg
