996 Crankcase O'ring

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Chris996, May 14, 2021.

  1. So I'm about to put my crankcases back together for my 996 and can't for the life of me remember whether or not there is supposed to be an o'ring seal between the crankcase halves.
Can anyone confirm if one goes in here or not?
    Thanks

  3. I think, back when gaskets were used rather than threebond, that the gasket covered that hole (at least my M900 did) but it looks like that's been machined specifically for an 'O' ring.

  4. My 996 had the o'ring when i rebuilt it. Expensive mistake if you do not install it.

  5. Thanks guys. Installed the crankcase halves today with the O Ring in place. It's strange because the Ducati parts schematic doesn't show the O Ring.

  6. Probably still using the old diagram from when gaskets were fitted?

I work with several Italian industrial machinery manufacturers and whilst they update their products regularly, their manuals etc. lag well behind.

As said, the parts diagram confusion comes about due to the O-ring being an upgrade mod. I enclose a picture of an earlier 916 crankcase to show no machining for an O-ring. When a fixing or shaft goes from a wet area to a dry area, despite the use of a conventional gasket, there is still the possibility of oil creep if no seals or interference fits et cetera are resorted to, and this is almost certainly why the mod has been introduced, have had to do similar in the past.
