  1. The rear mudguard has issues! No way Suzuki mounted the light like that. Though the actual light does look like a genuine one but perhaps not the bracket? The front mudguard doesn't look like its the right one either.

DK Motorcycles in Newcastle Under Lyme can be a useful source for used parts as you probably know. Also Martin at Crookes Suzuki in Barrow 01229 822120 is incredibly helpful, and if the part you want is available anywhere he will know. Plus Suzuki Fowlers 0117 977 0466 & Suzuki Robinson Foundry 01227 454366. https://www.cmsnl.com/ have a massive range of parts but the Brexit tax now applies to EU purchases so... I've bought from them all and can recommend them all.

  2. If only we could bottle nostalgia we'd be millionaires overnight.

  3. Yes, I tend to agree but I just found this, so that’s 2 I’ve seen apart from mine with the weird rear light/mudguard, foreign market?, aftermarket?, the thick plottens!
The front mudguard looks like the one used on the ram air previous model, I’ve see a fair few GT250A’s with this twin stay front guard but they could have been retrofitted or maybe Suzuki used up old stock at the launch of the A model, I’ve joined the VJMC some anorak on there will have the answers for sure!

  6. Ok so the VJMC anoraks have begun their assessment, the rear mudguard/light is correct for a German market bike, the jury is currently out on the front mudguard, it’s probably wrong and is from a ram air model, however it could be that if it’s one of the first GT250A’s it was fitted at the Suzuki factory as they used up ram air leftovers, so there you go I knew it!, I’ve got an extremely valuable rarity! (Not) :)

  7. I think the anoraks are mistaken.

Every model of that range designated "A" from Suzuki being 250, 380, 550 & 750 all had the same rear lights in the UK market and as far as I can see from pics, in the USA & everywhere else. This light was standard issue in the range before too -designated "M" and versions "L" in the UK. The bracket design that comes from the apex of the rear mudguard and then down at a right angle is also used on AP50, A100, B120 GT125 & GT185. A very similar one is also on all the TS range from 50 through 250 with a slight variant for the later SP370; though on the smaller bikes and the trailbikes the actual light & lens were square.

Now its possible that the Fritz's needed a different rear light design to the rest of the world, but its not too likely.

Then how do you explain this beautifully restored example Jez, and the fact that one of the VJMC anoraks actually has a German import model himself with the same rear set up :)

Or this one, btw these are both B models but the same applies

  9. Well as I said its possible that the Germans had a different light bracket for their market.

However as you pointed out the bikes featured is a "B" and typically has a different light shape in all markets except for the two pictures you've attached. So its my guess that your original idea that a German aftermarket supplier made them & perhaps still does.

Perhaps the anorak likes to think his bike is 100% original? (and it could be). I think the yellow side reflectors were standard issue by the time his bike was produced so something is a little strange. They are integrated into the sides of the "B" rear light lens.

I'm going to have to find an X7 now and come around for a "burn"... LOL

  10. I personally think it’ll turn out to be a Suzuki part Jez, I mean why would aftermarket make something specifically for the GT look so different to what it was replacing ? (and frankly so ugly!) :), I will keep digging and get a definitive answer at some point though!.

  11. You may well be right.

But using the same logic, why would the German market require such an ugly thing when no other country did? I also looked up all the microfiche for Suzuki 250's from 1973 to 1981. Whilst I cannot be sure the library had everything, it does have both styles of lights and brackets, and both styles of front mudguard. There is no Suzuki part listing or diagram for the ugly one!

Somewhere in the back of my mind there's a vague memory that my metal mudguards on an AP50 were stamped with Suzuki part numbers, so perhaps you will find something on these too?

  12. My answer to why would Suzuki make something so ugly is ….. RE5 rotary:)

Good point re part numbers, I’ll definitely check that out , on the photos I can see a decal at the bottom of the mudguard, it looks like one of those that the manufacturers put specs on, like total laden weight etc, unfortunately the photo resolution isn’t good enough for me to enlarge it enough to be sure but it does look like a Suzuki sticker, (just added photo, of course it could just be black gaffer tape:) :) ) the seller will be surprised on Saturday when I dash to the bike and start closely inspecting the rear mudguard!.
I think it’s Suzuki Jez, I’ve now found too many examples of it on other GT’s with it fitted, why it would be different to the rest of the world is a different question though??.
Edit: German law requires the mudguard to be 150mm from the axle centreline, that would account for it being longer.

  13. I was looking at an RE5 at DK Motorcycles a few days ago -what a pig!

So the Germans have a rule about mudguards that nobody else does, which explains it. How weird! Thats a brilliant bit of sleuthing Mark, and I will always think of you from now on as a Sherlock Holmes. Well done.

  14. Elementary…….
