Uneven Pad Wear

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by JamieW, Jun 16, 2021.

  1. Calling technical boffins! Just went to change my pads and one brake pad seems to have worn a little unevenly. All others look okay and even. It doesn't appear to be a huge amount, but you can see it better in the flesh. Bike is a V2. Year and half old. About 1300 miles, 7-800 of those on track. These pads have done 3 trackdays, didn't notice anything on the last set, but they were less worn. I'm heading into my local dealership tomorrow to get something else done briefly so I'll ask them too, just be good to have some ideas.

  2. The most likely cause is the pistons are sticking slightly and not fully retracting when the brake lever is released, holding the pad onto the disc surface.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. ^agree. Get the toothbrush out and thoroughly clean the callipers. Make sure the retaining pin is clean and smooth, bit of copperslip. It doesn’t look too bad though imho. I clean my brakes thoroughly after every two Trackdays (every one if I’m bored).

  4. It’s nothing to majorly worry about but as others have rightly mentioned. Clean the pistons and pins. Bleed the brakes up.

usually solves it. We remove the dust seals off of the race bikes as well.

  5. Cheers. I've given them a clean when changing the pads (with toothbrush @Expat Jack ), but I'll probably go over them again and spend a little more time on them then see how it goes. I'll be checking and cleaning them after each track day going forward as I hate even the smallest thing not being right.

  6. I have just stuck some SBS RS pads in mine. Very impressed so far and considerably cheaper than Brembo SC which are my normal go-to pads.

  7. I just got the brembo RC ones, but also ordered the SBS DC ones as trying to get pads at the min has been a bit of a pain so wanted a spare set. I thought the DS ones are the expensive ones? How's the feel? I'd like a bit more initial bite really, but the Brembo SC ones are fairly soft bite wise and I think the RC ones are supposed to be similar. Z04s seemed a bit much for trackdays at 250 a set. Do you mind me asking how much you paid for the SBS DS ones? I must be looking in the wrong place.

  8. I did not go for the carbon ones. The Race Sintered (RS) are more comparable to Brembo SC (or whatever they have decided to call them now). The SBS RS were just shy of £50 for the two front callipers. Think I paid nearly £80 for my last set of SCs. Good initial bite and plenty of power. First track outing on them next week hopefully.
I may try the Carbon ones next time.

  9. Zo4’s are epic. As are the super dooper sbs pads. But huge overkill.

I’ve got rs in the gsxr, and despite the wank abs, they were much better than the stock items.

  10. I've just started using ebc gpfax. About £100 a set but very impressed and last longer than the sbs dc I'd been using

  11. Yeah I got it mixed up, and it's the DS1 and 2's that are mega expensive. Would love to try Z04s but I know once I do I'll want to use them all the time and it's not like I'm winning anything so like you say, overkill really
